what are peoples' recommendations for NAS boxes available in the UK right now in the kind of £200-300 sort of range? I have a synology DS212j which is over 5 years old now, so it's getting towards the sort of age where it could do with replacing. Drives certainly are, but makes sense to do it all at once i think. Maybe it's far easier to migrate to a new Synology product than another vendor's? I am not unhappy with Synology but if there is clearly a better choice available then it's worth considering a move over. thanks

I would still go with a synology - they have an excellent little ecosystem in place. I'm planning to do just that myself late this year.

FreeNAS has matured nicely too, but probably only suited if you really fancy a DIY project.

nice username... you surely know your stuff wink

ok cool, i mean i was thinking that might be the case. If it was a few years ago when i had lots of time to tinker then yes, but right now i just want to plug something in and have it work, really. Also it needs to be quite compact, quiet etc... so rolling and self-supporting my own might not work!

I’ve got a DS213+, nice setup and still pleased with it.

However I am also thinking that in the next 12m it might be prudent to upgrade to something newer and more storage. Currently on 1TB raid1.

I have had transcoding issues using my NAS for some video streaming, so want to make sure the next one is a bit future proofed.

I think Synology or QNAP are the obvious choices.

Would also be good to share how easy it is to transfer your existing files / set up to the new NAS.

Will be watching with interest if you keep this thread updated with your progress smile
