spec me a POE switch and a couple of APs
Discussion
currently have my house wired up with cat 6 across the board. which is great but i need to get something done with wifi.
can anyone recommend a decent POE switch 4/8 port as i wouldnt mind installing some CCTV cameras down the line.
and a decent pair of Access points
currently have my virgin suberhub 3 connected to a 16 port gigabit unmanaged switch then feeds round the house from there.
the standard virgin wifi is well pants so i'd like something that can sit and manage all my connections and put the virgin hub into modem only mode
budget for switch and 1 AP ideally sub £350 dont need to factor in cat6 etc as i've still got a full reel sitting

Following this with interest.
Currently got a 24port un managed switch coupled to a unifi AP (with POE injector)
https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap/
Highly recommend the unifi (I keep looking at adding some of their network management stuff).
I run my sky q router in modem only and the single unifi AP (located in the middle of the house on the hallway ceiling covers all the broadband stuff).
Anything in a fixed position (tvs etc are wired)
Biggest issue for me is my sons xbox Stealing all the bandwidth

does anyone know the differenc between the different ubuiqti models offered?
Typically different nos of 2.4 and 5GHz channels, MIMO support or not, some have a degree of weatherproofing. The datasheet pdfs are typically pretty clear. e.g.https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_nanoHD_...

I bought a "refurbished" Netgear PoE managed switch from an eBay seller a couple of years ago. As well as a dozen or so ethernet end points for a media server, PCs and TV boxes, I have three PoE CCTV cameras connected, and a server running BlueIris CCTV software.
No problems with it at all.
For WiFi, I use 3x BT Wholehome mesh disks. One is plugged into my router(built-in WiFi disabled) directly, one is connected by ethernet to the Netgear switch, the third via WiFi to the "master" disc.
Again, the BT setup works perfectly - devices hop seamlessly between discs as users move around the house. I think this is a big advantage of a mesh setup over using a couple of APs?

so can anyone recommend a decent AP to stick up in the ceiling upstairs and a switch to feed it off.
ideally something that will let me get full use out of a 350-400mbps connection
It really depends on the size of house, but a Unifi UAP-AC-Pro and either a US-8-60W or US-8-150W POE switch would be a good start IMO.ideally something that will let me get full use out of a 350-400mbps connection
Ok so i'm thinking i still need a router............
Map something like this
Superhub 3 350/35 connection atm
|
Some sort of Router - any suggestions for ubuiqtui stuff their stuff gets good reviews and be nice to keep everything the same
|
16 port unmanaged switch - Feeds rest of house with gigabit wired
|
8 port as listed above with POE bits
|
2 ubuiqtui UAP Pro access points one upstairs one down stairs.
|
non moaning children who can connect to plex and netflix with no moaning at me

Use your Superhub as the router, just turn off the WiFi. Use an unmanaged switch and use PoE injectors for the two Unifi APs (some come with them others don't) . Save £s.
Or Superhub in modem mode. Unifi Security gateway as router. Unifi 16 port switch. Unifi 8 port switch with Poe. Unifi Cloud Key to control it all. Spend £s.
ETA. Also the UAP AC Pros are great APs but overkill for the average house. I usually fit the UAP AC Lite in domestic homes, they are smaller and cheaper and you can fit 3x lites for less money than 2x pros.
