I recently got FTTP internet which naturally led to lots of speed testing. Now the FTTP is a big let down and I'm getting nowhere near the speed quoted or even the stay fast speed. That's another matter.

During testing I've noticed my desktop which has a much better hardware spec than my laptop consistantly downloads much slower than my laptop dispite the speedtest figures being similar.

I'm getting around 6MBps on the desktop vs around 25MBps on the laptop. Both connected via ethernet. Both have GbE ports with the full duplex 1.0Gbps selected.

Anyone care to help me troubleshoot this?

Are both directly wired to the router or is one via a power line or the like? Could be a duff driver on the desktop too.

Both are wired direct to router. I let windows search for an updated driver which it found and installed. I might check for a driver from the motherboard site to be sure.

I just have standard windows 10 firewall and anti virus. I have just tried disabling them though with no change.

Going to be something client side on the Desktop I suspect.

Without looking at the PC and checking then nothing anyone can really do. Could be loads of things , drivers , bad NIC , bad cable , port on router could be slower / lower priority QoS (IDK what router you're using) etc etc etc etc.

Are you running a VPN? They can slow things down dramatically

I appreciate hard to diagnose on a forum. Just happy to get sugesstions really.

Have tried ethernet and wifi. Have swapped cables, changed router ports (it's a BT Smart Hub 2).

Have you looked at the task manager's view of the drive in the desktop you're downloading to?

If the drive itself is failing, it may be the bottleneck and appear 100% busy.

No, it's a self build I threw together and hoped for the best smile

These are the main components:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X AM4 Processor
MSI B450M PRO-VDH AM4 DDR4 mATX Motherboard
Ballistix Sport LT Gray 8GB DDR4-3000 UDIMM (x 2)

I would look at Performance under Task Manager as well.

If, for example, the desktop has a spinning hard disk it may be maxing out the write speed, vs an SSD or something faster on the laptop.

OP download teamviewer and send me the code and password via the "PM ME" function on my profile. I can take a look.

I have tried different drives, both SSD and HDD. I just checked the task manager and no issue there.

I'd be looking at the advanced property setting within the two nics. As well.

Update the BIOS of the motherboard. I am assuming he NIC is embedded? Then Update the chipset driver and the NIC driver from the manufacturers website only. Uninstall the old nic driver first selecting the option to delete the driver software, this will force windows to reload a generic microsoft NIC driver on the next boot, then install the NIC driver.

Boot from a linux live CD / USB and try again from within there to rule out OS issues.
