Just wondering as my old HP laptop is playing up and turning itself off, if it might be the charger - it gets very hot very quickly, almost too hot to touch after 20 or so minutes.

(When this first happened and tried to restart, the laptop powered up, the fan came on and then it turned off within seconds. This happened 3 times then it fired up fine.

Since holding power button down a minute and cleaning the charge port and lead, it starts fine but the charger gets so hot I shut it down before half an hour is up.

Pattern charger is only a tenner but am I looking in the right area or should I check other potential issues first?

(Core temp is fine, it turns off before the fan has cut in)

Yes, very much so and this all happened with the battery removed as I did think removing it might help.
