Hi folks, a bit of advice please from those who do this sort of thing.....

This is purely amateur but I fancied writing a few apps for my android phone/tablet and downloaded Android Studio. Read a few tutorials about Kotlin and managed to scrape together a couple of simple apps eventually. Ok so far.

Now I like Android Studio as an environment, but boy is it slow on my PC. I can live with it being slow to load up a project but when it's building it takes ages. Ok, it's an old desktop PC but it's responsive on Photoshop, Visual Studio and basic video editing, it's just Android Studio that makes it feel like it's stopped.

Spec - Intel i5 ivybridge running at 3400, 8GB ram, SSDs for boot, applications & project work. Latest version of W10, fairly standard OS setup.

Am I expecting too much from old hardware ? If so, what sort of specs do you folks run for A/S ?

Finally, I like A/S but is there anything out there (free !) that runs quicker than A/S and is as forgiving to a novice ?

TIA.
Brian

I wouldn't use A/S if I was just playing about I would use B4A: https://www.b4x.com/b4a.html

I suspect 8gb may not hack it for A/S. A/S is written in Java so it may be you need to tweak the JVM settings. Help/Edit Custom VM options on the menu.

Thanks for the reply and advice on the B4X thing. I'm not in the IT scene so perhaps it's not surprising that I'd not heard of that compiler. I just went with Android Studio because it seemed to be the most talked about from google searches and there were youtube tutorials to get me started.

I had wondered about memory given that 16GB seems to be average these days. I did try it on a 4GB/SSD laptop and it's not usable at all on that so you're probably right on 8GB being borderline. The previous version I had (3.xx) wasn't so bad but the latest one looks better, runs slower.

I think I'll give the B4A a shot so thanks for the info. As I said I'm just tinkering, trying to learn something new so there's no deadlines to meet.

Thanks again.
