I’ve never bought a cpu cooler before, and never had one come with a cpu I’ve bought before.

So we’ve had our case, mobo, psu, memory, ssd and cpu delivered today, and my son was really excited to look at all the bits.

Unpacked everything, had a quick nose. Then we came to the cpu. It’s a ryzen 5 with graphics built in. It comes with a massive cooler/fan. As a fan of physics, I touched the base of the cooler, the bit that contacts the cpu with the back of a finger, to see how cold it felt.

And it has thermal paste preapplied.

I’ve left a slight indentation in the paste. Is it likely to cause a problem with uneven coverage? Should I buy some more and just spread it on? Should I clean it all off and start again?

Bugger.

It should squeeze flat when you clamp it down.

Unless you've wiped a significant lump out of it I wouldn't think it will be a problem.
