I'm planning another upgrade to my PC soon, which will include a new CPU and motherboard.

I have heard that swapping in a new motherboard can cause issues relating to the OS and BIOS if you use the same HDD's - is this true?

I plan to just drop in a new motherboard and CPU and connect everything back up (existing PSU should still be suitable) and keep the same HDD's.

Will Windows boot fine or will I run into problems? Will I have to do a fresh install of Windows?

Current spec below if it matters...

Intel i7-6700k (I'm looking at upgrading to a 10th gen Intel chip so I need a new motherboard with the latest LGA1200 socket)
Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z170 (LGA1151 socket)
Nvidia 980 ti
16GB RAM
SATA SSD and SATA HDD
Corsair CX 600W
Win 10

Why go for 10th Gen Intel i mean really why much more value in the amd lineup

Is should be fine may need to reactivate unless you have bitlocker enabled

You may need new memory too as yours will likely be a bit slow but with the stupid decision by intel to gimp memory support it's not gonna cost much

Depending on how old your existing setup is, you may experience UEFI/Secure Boot issues, but these are easily worked around in the new system's BIOS settings.

Thanks for that, yeah I hadn’t really thought about AMD. My first build was AMD (bulldozer) and it was great but when I moved to the 6700k it was night and day so just automatically thought to stick with Intel, but you’re right I could have a read on the latest AMD kit.

Latest amd is superior to the Intel stuff really in most ways

Just had a look at the 9 3900X and 5 3600X are very expensive. Are they really better than the Intel equivalents?

I’m aware Intel have always been king but appreciate things change.

I think you are asking for trouble expecting windows to just boot, days of old you needed a rebuild as the HAL was different on new MOBOs.

Trustmeimakesweepingstatements wink

Little to choose from between AMD and Intel. Vastly unlikely that you'll notice any day-to-day difference; AMD "generally" cheaper, Intel "generally" better single-core performance, AMD "generally" better multicore.

But like I say, in everyday usage you won't notice a jot of difference so just go for whatever looks shiny / is cheaper / fits in better with the lounge wallpaper / whatever your discriminating criteria are.

They are cheaper than the intel equivalent e.g. 5 3600X is £210 - Intel 10600K is £275

Look at this review - https://www.techradar.com/reviews/intel-core-i5-10...

The 10600K probably edges it over all benchmarks but the 3600X is traded blows in the synthetics (actually wins 9/15) and only a couple of FPS behind in the gaming benchmarks.

The 10600K is 30% more expensive for roughly (within 5%) the same performance and you get PCIE 4 with the 3000 series AMD chips for that nice new NVME SSD you want to buy too smile

There hasnt been any real gains from intel in generations they are gimping non z motherboards. Only one company gives even half a st about end users and it isn't intel.

Some examples using passmark
10980xe $979 vs 3950x $689
33756 Vs 39301

So in fact it's closer to a 3900x or xt at 32868 or 33309 and they are $419 and $479

Oh and don't forget the power requirements!
