Discussion
It's been years since I last built a desktop and I'm thinking of building one now, with the aim of VR sim gaming.
Below are the parts I'm thinking of, would appreciate some critique.
I'm also looking for the nice cables I see in PC buiding videos were the power cables appear to be tied neatly together.
The parts are really stretching the budget so would be extra bonus if there are cheaper "bang for buck" alternatives
1) CPU : AMD 3950X
2) Mobo : Asus X570-Plus
3) CPU cooler : Corsair Hydro Series H150i PRO
4) RAM : x2 G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-16GTZR Trident Z RGB Series 16 GB
5) GPU : ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Super
6) SSD : x2 Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2
7) Data drive :Seagate BarraCuda Pro 8 TB
8) PSU :Corsair AX850
9) Case : Corsair Obsidian 500D

edit : no idea how to correct the typo in the subject...

The boy and I built an almost identical PC at Christmas, albeit a 3900 because the 3950 wasn't launched when I did the shop and a ti GPU.
It runs everything on Ultra.
Got a Valve Index arriving this week so will let you know on HL Alyx. Tried the build with an Oculus Rift and it is fantastic.
It's brilliant.
People will tell you it's overkill, it probably is, but you could think of it as future proofing. If you can afford to do it you won't regret it.
Edit: This was it. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/24cfyk

Building is simple these days only things to look at are mounting the cpu/cooler might be different and the M.2 drives were a first for me on a desktop
3950 imo is overkill for anything other than heavy multi threaded work like video encoding, I'd save some money and go lower down if you are looking to save
cables and cable management depend on the case but most have easy access and routing etc now. A PSU with modular cables is a must for a decent build you use what you need and can swap with 3rd party ones if you are into that

I would love a 2080ti but that definitely is out of budget at the moment. It runs everything on Ultra.

I've clicked on your link and it brings me to my build page? Weird...

Cheers. I just want to make it as future proof as possible. I'm thinking of playing the new MS flight sim in VR hence the beefy CPU.3950 imo is overkill for anything other than heavy multi threaded work like video encoding, I'd save some money and go lower down if you are looking to save

I've seen loads of those very neat cable being used in PC build videos. They don't looks like modular cables that comes with PSUs. The cables are colour coded and all neatly stuck to each other. Unfortunately the videos doesn't mention the source.

The PSU will be modular so you can plug in any cables you want. it just has an array of sockets (and usually comes with its own cables)I've seen loads of those very neat cable being used in PC build videos. then you can use those or buy in 3rd party ones like these

Likely a new 3080 card coming out in September. Can you wait a couple of months?
Yes, a few months is feasible. I still have by trusty 1080 to game with for now
I'll do some research on the 3080.
The 1080 is still a great card, in all honesty. I'm waiting for a 3080ti or equivalent to replace my long in the tooth Titan X Maxwell... (900 series). Still works well enough for the time being!
You pay a lot more for stuff at the top end.... which sometimes makes sense - like the CPU or graphics cards, but much much less for things like storage.
Take your hard drive choice, that one 8Tb drive is listed at $800. You could be two 4Tb drives for about half that, and have the same 8Tb. And that there would be your biggest saving.
That aside, you're spending a lot on storage, that I'm really not sure you'd use with gaming. I'm not sure if you're trying to go for RAID with the two SSDs, but if not, perhaps get something smaller and cheaper for the OS, and then use the other larger one for frequently played games. I'm still not sure what you'd do with 8Tb either

Nvidia are reportedly using a new power connector for the 30x0 cards, should be adapters and modular psu should cope but who knows.

It's been years since I've built a desktop but really loving the ideas of custom cables. It really makes the whole build much tidier without much effort.

Likely the whole 3000 series will come out around the same time too, personally I wouldn't buy a 2xxx card now, as they'll either be reduced in price or hopefully big improvements in the next gen.

Yeah, been monitoring the new GPUs and newer models seems to come out quicker these days. The 1080 is still a great card, in all honesty. I'm waiting for a 3080ti or equivalent to replace my long in the tooth Titan X Maxwell... (900 series). Still works well enough for the time being!
I'm hunkering for some ray tracing (lol) and VR so leaning towards VR.
It's a big budget (to me) build so don't mind waiting. My current card is the GTX1080G not 1080Ti but it's still pretty good. Even with the new 3xxx series I don't reckon I can stretch to the Tis though.
When I build a PC I usually hang on to it for at least 5 years, after that I will pass it along to the kids with some upgrades,

To be honest I just wanted a fast spindle drive for data. I sometimes do some lightweight video editing etc and also have massive library of high fidelity songs.Take your hard drive choice, that one 8Tb drive is listed at $800. Regarding the M.2 I'm just trying to fill both the slots lol. Perhaps I can reduce to just x1 1TB Sabrent. Would it be recommended to have the O/S and games on same drive?
