Mac Mail and archived mailboxes

I've been through a couple of macbooks in the past 3 or so years and I have saved my mail boxes to icloud.

Due to my primary work email previously being pop and now having subsequently switched provider, these icloud mailboxes are the only remaining location of my historic emails.

I can see them sat nicely in iCloud (and they're 16gb+), but how do I put them in the Mail app so that I can open them? You would have thought you could simply drag and drop them, but that isn't working.

Any ideas?

There is a File > Import Mailboxes menu. You'd probably want to make sure they are downloaded from iCloud and stored locally first.
