I'm using a desktop pc on win 10 pro and have recently started having a problem whereby num lock turns off and back on again randomly causing a key press on '1' to do the 'end' function, '7' to do the 'home' funtion etc. The num lock light stays lit and pressing the num lock key causes the light to turn on and off but makes no difference to the numeric keypad.

I've tried 2 wired keyboards and it happens with both of them, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it at all.

It's not the num lock off on startup issue (although this is the case but I just turn it on every time I start the PC)

Googling only seems to show issues where people want to make it stay on permanently rather than have to turn it on when starting the pc, that isn't my issue.

TLDR = numeric keypad stops and starts functioning as a numeric keypad randomly.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you

Derek Smith

No such problem for me, and I use the number pad quite a lot.

Home build or a brand machine? Have seen this when fast boot is enabled and there is a registry key you updaet to overide it but ultimately in most cases it is caused by:

MS Office - Early versions such as 2010
BIOS firmware or chipset drivers need an update.

Thanks Guys,

It's a work machine but isn't an "out of the box" setup. I'll put pressure on our IT guys as at the moment they aren't sure why it is. At first I was told it's likely to be a failing keyboard so I swapped to another one and it's still the same.

We're using Office 365.

Any pattern to how it is happening?

I’ve had similar glitches come and go, but since disabling fast start my machine has been faultless.
