My printer is always complaining that "SMTP server not setup". It's been bugging me for ages and I finally worked out how to simply turn the error message off.

But then I wondered what it's for and whether I can use it, anyone know?

I can tell that I can use it for emailing myself reports, but I can't see what else it can be used for. It's a Lexmark MX310dn, with a built in scanner, so can I set it up scan to email, and can I set it up so that I can email the printer things to print?

Thanks

SMTP would be used for outgoing email. Incoming email would be done by a different protocol. That's not to say that it can't accept incoming email, but it's probably moaning about the SMTP server because it's programmed to send status reports or alerts.

SMTP will be there for submitting “scan to email” jobs to a mail server primarily.

I have mine setup like this. It’s handy being able to email scanned images directly to my own mailbox where I can forward or store as I choose.

If you use office365 the instructions are here
