It's been a while since I've used one however I believe you have to 'programme' the remote to work with your specific TV/Blueray/VCR.

By programme, I mean you have to type in a 4 digit code specific to your equipment on the remote to get them to talk to each other.

These things do work, but it's either witchcraft or magic.

My mate's daughter sorted mine out (fnarrr) in about 5 minutes.

It's worked fine for a couple of years already.

I have a Harmony all in one due to similar issues. It occasionally has a bit of a lag that can be annoying but otherwise is great. You program it via a USB lead to PC/laptop and it works over wi-fi.

Think it's just infrared, each device that comes with your TV/blue ray player etc will use the same method and have its own specific range of codes.
The remote just mimics the original signal and codes.

You just have to program the remote with the correct code for the device.
It normally comes with a book of codes.
The remote will also scan for the code if it's not in the book.

I used one many years ago for TV/video/dvd/av amp.

Worked fine for what it was and did most of the devices functions.

Had a harmony remote which was great, easy programming etc. Some of the buttons stopped working so bought a one 4 all. Did just about everything but couldn't get it to delete recordings on the bt you view box. Rarely use the bt box these days since upgrading to a smart tv except for f1,Moto GP and wsbk so use the crappy bt remote when required and the TV remote for everything else.
One 4 all is a lot cheaper, harmony is a lot better
