7 year old Daughter uses Mums iPad at the moment but we're thinking to get her her own tablet for her Birthday next month

She's dropped Mums Ipad twice resulting in broken screens etc so i don't wish to buy a £300+ tablet for her

It needs to be full size like a regular IPad and rubber bumper cases need to be available. WiFi only with a great screen resolution & sound & headphone jack

She uses it for watching movies whilst travelling, playing children's games etc OS must support Netflix & Disney Channel

What's the best for her - budget circa £100 to £200? Amazon? Galaxy?

Kindle Fire 7/8/10 depending on budget - load the Google Apps store onto it, super cheap and quite sturdy in a suitable case

Ours have the Amazon Fire Kids 8, but the 10 is better resolution. Easy set up and monitoring, they hate that it stops dead at screens off time though laugh

When looking at the kids ones, a lot of them are rubbish spec, and have poor memory. A decent adult device with a robust case will give better value and last longer.

My 2.75 year old absolutely knows the hierarchy of the tablets / phones in the house. We are lucky in she is careful and not particularly clumsy but even at her age she wouldn't be happy with a kid one if others were available!

An 8" one will be more manageable size wise, and a bit more robust to damage.

We've ditched tablets now and are using Chromebooks - homeschooling kicked off the idea. We have Lenovo convertible jobs. Bit bulkier than your typical tablet, but proving robust thus far and are quite a bit more flexible.

My 2.9 year old is more than happy with the 6 year old knackered Samsung tablet I let him use and doesn't know or care that it's on it's last legs!

I honestly think a 3 year old will be happy with whatever you give them, be it a kids model or not, providing they can operate it?

I think any of the Amazon fire tablets will be fine, or you could order something like an Alldocube iPlay 20 from Banggood for £90-ish.

Don't buy a Kindle Fire HD for Kids.

We persevered but the Amazon crap they insist you have to use, particularly Dolphin Browser because they wont let you install anything else and the awful parental controls they developed but didn't really bother thinking how people would use them rendered ours pointless so we sold them and with a heavy heart bought 2 ipads.

Whitelisting websites, for example, you'd think that would be simple. Child wants access to a website that isnt one of Amazons god awful 'procured' apps. No, you have to create a webclip shortcut that wont even act as a favourite. It was eye stabbingly awful.

As much as Amazon think they have a Apple challenging integrated ecosystem that makes parents lives a doddle, they are so far wide of the mark it;'s unfunny.

Buy cheap, sell cheap. Buy once. Ipads work. The parental controls work, they allow kids to ask for more time, access to certain things and it's so much less time consuming that reading through pages on the Amazon forums about 'How do I get my kids tablet to view kids you tube if they're under 7'

That wasn't our experience tbh

Parental controls work well in Fire OS

Google Play store lets you install anything you would from another equivalent version Android tablet

The only downside of the Fire tablets is the fragile USB ports which break quite quickly, and replacement is fiddly. I bought a magnetic adapter which works well.

Concerta XL are incredible tablets for active kids. They can really help improve concentration and schoolwork, and all-round behaviour.

Yes, but you need to faff about and sideload Google Play to fire devices to get it on there. The parental controls are also a ballache to set up, there's so little storage that they slow to a crawl after about 6 months or so and need a deep clean to sort out, and are generally just slow in daily use - I'm fairly savvy with android based stuff and can get them back to peak use but it still takes an hour or so to resolve, a non tech savvy person would be stumped. My 6yo got so fed up and frustrated with his kids 7" that he started using his mother's much older Hudl 2 as it's slicker in use (that also needs a periodic deep clean - 16gb just isn't enough on Android based devices where the OS uses 6.5gb of that and the cache starts to fill up)

Years ago, as a Pharmacist, I had a call from a Vet dealing with a dog who had swallowed "some" of them.

It's prolonged release, pharmaceutical grade amphetamine. The dog would have played fetch for about 30 hours straight.

(They sedated the dog, and it was fine in a couple of days.)

I'd recommend getting them to save up, research the best option and then come back to you with a list of options.

Kind of strategy I'll be taking with my child when they come asking for similar technology.

I really can't say I'd want to spend any more on anything new/good until they'd stopped dropping my own one!

How does a 7 year old save up money to buy a tablet? biggrin

We had the Amazon fire when our lad was that age and it was fine. He just played games on it, mainly. Buying them an iPad sets a bad precedent imo. I think it's good to have stuff that's a bit st when you're a kid as it helps you appreciate things better.

My 5yr old recently progressed from her iPad Mini 2 (which was mine and lived in my work bag but didn't get much use) to a 9.7 iPad which I got for free from a company I worked with.

In fairness the mini was never dropped (that I know of) and the only damage it has was when I dropped it outside just after getting it. No cases or screen protectors are present and this hasn't been an issue to date.

I wouldn't hesitate to replace with another iPad when the time comes.

TBH I wouldn't mess on with android tablets or the amazon ones as (from my experience of them personally and with friends/colleagues) they always seem to need something doing to them to make them work well (or even just as they are supposed to)
