I know, I know....first world problems
My wife has been using a steps counter on her iPhone for the last few weeks trying to do 10000 per day. Why, I have no idea.
Anyway, if she goes out in the early morning then again later in the day it counts the steps, shows the two walks but doesn't always add the second lot on for her daily total. Any reasons why? (Why it's not adding on, not why she's doing it or even why 10000!). I'm wondering if it's the time gap between the two walks.

Does she have any watches or other devices that also record steps?

Within the apple app it's possible to adjust the priority of device it records from.

Might be better to buy a cheap FitBit / Garmin, but I thought the "Health" app could do this?

I'm assuming she keeps the phone in a pocket near her waist. If so, there's no sensible reason it wouldn't count steps all the time (not just when out walking).

As to why 10,000? because it's the typically recommended number (with associated health benefits). Why is she doing it? No idea.

If the phone is cushioned in something on her person, e.g. a purse or bag, then there's a chance it will not be able to accurately gauge steps, since it is based off of readings from the accelerometers, gyroscopes and compasses.

If she's that into the Activity awards she would be better off buying an Apple Watch, to be honest.

I had the issue of getting all my fitness info into Apple Health, and the best thing I did was buy a cheap fitness band.

I bought a 'Honor Band 5' made by Huawei. You can buy them for £29 brand new and I can honestly say it is amazing for the money.

Connects seamlessly with iPhone and automatically uploads all data to Apple Health app.
Battery lasts 2 weeks on a charge.
Notifications - vibrates to 'tap' your wrist when someone calls, or you get a text message, WhatsApp, Facebook message, calendar notification etc.
Heartbeat monitoring
Blood Oxygen level monitoring.
Sleep monitoring.
Steps and activity recording.
Calories.
Displays the weather + time + date etc
Waterproof.
Multi-Day Alarm clock that vibrates and 'taps' your wrist to wake you up.
Great touchscreen.
Very small and light.

It has loads of 'smart' learning tech in it as well, so you can set it to wake you up automatically when it detects you have had enough sleep and are in a light sleep phase. really good.

Plus lots more.

All for £29, and it's really accurate. Mental.

I've also got some Nokia smart scales in my bathroom, and these also send data seamlessly to Apple Health. If you don't own smart scales, I seriously recommend them. The long term tracking of your weight, fat, bone mass, etc is very handy to be able to see in a graph.

Obviously no one actually read your post properly, as you clearly stated it is recording the steps, so its nothing to do with being in a bag.
I would check her time and date is set to automatic and is correct. And also, that her timezone is set correctly on the phone and in the app if it is a setting.
Sounds like it is probably treating the two sessions as different days.
There's no way a basic app like that cant get a daily total right. There has to be a basic error in something that is causing it to not total correctly.

Was going to say something similar- It should total them up so something is wrong somewhere

Thanks Jackal & Craig, yes it shows the two walks with vertical bars and the total for each walk but doesn't always total then up at the end of the day and get a red circle or something...it does maybe 5 days out of 7 but messes up the other two.
She's beginning to wonder if she needs to open up the app immediately after the walk to get it to register, I wonder if it's the time delay between the two walks.

No, it is because the Japanese character for 10,000 looks like a person walking and a company used it to market a pedometer - no scientific basis for it at all (although obviously doing some exercise is beneficial, but the magical 10k - nope) - https://www.popsci.com/story/health/10000-steps-ev...

Very interesting.

To be fair though,10,000 steps averages around 5 miles, so if you walk that everyday I would suggest it was pretty beneficial to health. 35 miles a week of walking isn't to be sniffed at!

I-phone step counter is IME very inaccurate. Tell her to get a Fitbit which records steps throughout the day .

The iPhone is fine for the basic counting of steps for walking around and hitting specific targets. There's really no point getting another device for that! Who cares if it's not massively accurate? It really doesn't matter for this usage.

Personally I use an app called Pedometer on iOS to display step count. It is a simpler interface than the Health app and gives interesting stats/targets. It also has a clean and simple widget you can add to the iOS widget screen.

Is this a new iPhone running the latest iOS?

I hike and use a Garmin Instinct for that. The step count compared to my iPhone 11 can be hugely different. For the simple aim of 10k steps a day I just don't think it's worth getting another device though, it's just more clutter!

The inaccuracy in this case is a good thing as my iphone records about 30% less of my steps than my Fitbit so she’ll be doing more steps than she thinks

The red circle activity thing only works if it’s recorded via an apple watch or such device.

She shouldn't be referring to the Activity App, she should be looking at the Health App.

The Health app tracks steps, distance and a whole load more depending upon the phone and other accessories.

The Activity app is used through the apple watch and presents the data from the watch.

To answer the Qs above, it's an iPhone 7, she's not exactly up to speed with all it's workings, (nor am I)
The red circle does come on for the day IF it decides to add the morning and evening walks together.
