NAS presenting as Apple Time Capsule
Discussion
After much arguing, Apple told me recently that they no longer support network drives acting as Time Capsules. I have a Synology NAS on my home network which has specific functionality (even in the latest software updates) for presenting itself as a Time Capsule for Mac backups, and it worked fine until a few months back when it kept showing consistency errors and requiring new full backups to be created constantly. They told me I had to go and buy a USB drive to plug into the Macbook to act as a backup drive. Seems like a massive backward step, but i guess this has been coming for a while since they officially pulled the native Time Capsule product from the market. Maybe it's just too hard for them. Apple just seem to be going really s

That's odd.
I'm still using an ancient Synology NAS for TM backups from three Macs in the house without problems. I'm on the latest version of Catalina, and no problems backing up at the moment.
it only started messing up when i got a new macbook. That shouldn't logically have changed anything really, but it did. I am not ruling out some kind of deliberate defeat function they have built in. I have tried numerous settings changes on all sides... using AFP instead of Samba, all sorts. I guess if it is working for you then fine but do be aware that if you get any issues whatsoever, Apple will just throw their hands up and send you away, so maybe it's not something you can depend upon. That's not what Apple say here:

I've used an old ReadyNAS as the timemachine drive for two macs for years. Both are getting on and aren't current though.

Yes, and accordingly i pressed and pressed the support person on it and they just kept squirming. I think the published position is about to change. Apple are underhand as fhttps://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202784

k and even though they have just hit $2Tr, I wouldn't be surprised if they no longer exist in 5-10 years time as they are turning loyal customers off all over the world. Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
