Is it difficult to set up an iPhone for a child?
Discussion
My daughter (12years) wants an iPhone with her own telephone number. I'm going to get her a second hand handset and ask EE for a sim-only.
The only bit I'm worried about is setting up the iPhone from scratch. I imagine Apple will ask for an Apple ID and credit card etc etc. Is there an easy way to simply set it up and give her an iPhone without any worry of her spending any (of my) money? She plays a lot of stuff like Roblox etc and I've heard a few horror stories of children making purchases and racking up big bills
Cheers

Set the apple ID up with your email address and a password that she doesn't know. When she tries make a purchase she will be unable to without the password.
I think I tried this a long time ago and because i already had an Apple id associated with that email address it wouldn't let me. I need to check when I get home.. but I think she already might have an Apple Id which she uses that I pay 0.79/mth for extra storage for. I'm not sure if this is a spare Apple ID I have set up of mine that I let her use, or if it's one I changed her date of birth to make her 18!? I'm in a bit of a mess with it all... might need to find a Genius bar or something like that
Thank you for the replies, I'll have a look at the links over the weekend and may drop a few more questions to you guys if I get stuck
Just one quick q - If I put my daughter on Family Sharing, will she receive or see anything on my iPhone? I'm not sure what happened but a few years ago when we gave our son an old iPhone (his mothers) both my wife and son could see each others messages their friends were sending. Confused the hell out of me that we had to take it off him

Ignore this. It ends up being a whole world of hurt, and when they actually need their own Apple ID you can’t transfer anything.
Apple have detailed instructions about how to set up an Apple ID for a child and manage it remotely from your own device.
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201084
Both my kids have their own accounts, along with Screen time - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208982 and a Family Sharing - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201088 - means they can’t buy anything without approval, watch or listen to certain things, and even have their web site accessed managed. As they get older I gradually remove restrictions to a point where they’ll be able to do anything on their own accounts.
Ok, I knew I'd struggle with this Apple have detailed instructions about how to set up an Apple ID for a child and manage it remotely from your own device.

When I go to Settings>[your name]>Family Sharing ... I don't have an option to "Add Family Member"!
Mine just says "Set Up Family Sharing" and then asks me what features I'd like to share - Itunes & App Store Purchases, Apple Music, Icloud Storage, Location Sharing, or lastly Screen Time.
I have no option to ADD FAMILY MEMBER
A word of caution.
My son set up an iPhone for my Granddaughter. She went onto lots of chat room sites apparently speaking with others of her own age. We couldn’t make her understand that the 17 year old lad from Boston she was speaking with could just as easily be 70 and in Glasgow.
Keep a watch on what she’s doing.

I've sorted it now thank you. I needed to put in my credit card security code and for some reason my phone wasn't connected to wi-fi (we have a couple of cheapo range extenders that it connects and disconnects from).
I have created an icloud email account for her. Will this be like a proper email account for example like outlook/hotmail etc? I want an email account for her to be able to receive stuff from school (homework) etc.
I have also turned on "Ask to Buy". I assume with this on there is no way at all for her to purchase any paid items?.. But will still be able to download free apps?
I can see me having to purchase extra storage for her in time for things like photos etc - this isn't a problem, but will I just do this via my own Apple account?
Sorry for all the questions... it's something I've put off for a long time but need to do it now and want to get it right

Yes the iCloud email address is a regular email service by using Apple Mail. I've sorted it now thank you. I needed to put in my credit card security code and for some reason my phone wasn't connected to wi-fi (we have a couple of cheapo range extenders that it connects and disconnects from).

Ask to buy, she will need your approval for all purchases, whether they are free or subject to a charge.
She can use your iCloud storage.

Just tested it with Roblox - a free app. When she tried to download it from the App store I was sent a permission request
