I'm considering the purchase of a new 27inch monitor primarily for photo editing and subsequent printing.

I'm doing some online research and there appears to be a divergence of opinion over whether 4k monitors are beneficial for image editiing

I thought I'd see what the collective thoughts are of this forum over the topic

Any input welcomed

Don't worry about resolution, they keep increasing it to sell monitors.

What you want is colour performance, so go and read about colour profiles, gamut, sRGB Adobe RGB and that kind of stuff.

Thanks for that I'm aware I need a wide gamut IPS monitor with Adobe RGB for printing. I was interested in the resolution issue

Resolution is definitely a bonus but not as beneficial as colour accuracy and wide gamut support. I would rather a 2k 100% AdobeRGB with accuracy and uniformity than any cheap 4K without. Of course there are varying degrees of colour accuracy and to get the best results you don't just need a good display, you need to make sure its calibrated properly. Some even have built in colorimeters for this purpose. There's also support for 10bit (per channel i.e. 30-bit) colour but this is only much use if you're using apps and a GPU which support it.

The whole subject is a bit of a minefield but I would start by comparing prices of mid-range 2K and 4K screens which support 99%+ AdobeRGB
