Hi everyone,
Grateful for your help with the below.
I have recently purchased NordVPN and have installed it into my asus router which is used in conjunction with Virgin media.
I can't seem to access Netflix anymore if the VPN is activated. is there any way to change the router location to a different country using the VPN? I know that I can change individual devices to a different location but wasn't sure how to change it for the router itself..
thanks

Unfortunately, country specific content e.g. from Netflix, BBC recognise you are using a VPN (they keep a list of IPs they use) and have blocked you..

This article explains what's happening: https://www.vpngeeks.com/does-nordvpn-work-with-ne...

Thanks Wormus

very helpful.

The article suggests that some lIP ocations eg Canada still allow netflix. Is it possible to configure the VPN for the router to "Canada" rather than just individual devices?

From memory you download the appropriate config

You might not want to though as the ping will be horrendous

What's the reason behind sending all your traffic via the VPN?

Thanks all,

Haha....I was told that I should use a VPN for everything....but it sounds like that it’s not necessary.

Under what circumstances should I use it?

You only need one if you access the internet on a public wifi service, say a cafe or pub. Even then it is only really necessary if you are sending personal info over unencrypted links.

Or, of course, if you want to hide your traffic from your ISP, if you're accessing dodgy sites.

There's no need to send all your traffic down a VPN. You'll have speed hits and all you're really doing is shifting your internet browsing via another company.

If it's to access foreign Netflix, download Torrents etc then just use the VPN on the device you wish to undertake these tasks.

Just to give a usage case, on my 4G router I’m using the VPN service from A&A to give me a fixed IP, bypass CGNAT and get around some of the crap Three/EE do to their network.

I’m planning on dropping my unreliable and slow FTTC connection all together and just using 4G.

You would only use it if you have something to hide. In the UK and most western countries this would be bittorrent and maybe access to region locked services (although most work normally jus straight up from the UK).

There are various securty risks using a VPN and therefore it is not sensible unless you have a specific reason and then you only use when that reason applies. The advice you were given is wrong or out of context.

The 4 countires with the lowest number of VPN users are Oz, US, UK and Germany with around 5%. The highest are Indonesia, India, Turkey and China with 31-38%. Most 'ex-pat' countries have around 25% of users as they all want home region locked content or content not allowed locally.

Thanks everyone,
Very helpful. I’ll reserve the VPN use to when I’m using public WiFi or out of the country, whenever that may occur given current pandemic.
Presume it’s also useful to offer a different IP address to sign up for services which might be of different prices elsewhere the world...Netflix and Youtube premium come to mind; not sure of any other programs/apps?

If they region lock it using IP then yes. Some do and some don't (they just take it based on whatever country / address you provide).
