Connecting External Lavalier Microphone to iPhone 8 Plus

I am having issues getting the TRS to TRRS adapter linked below to work with the lavalier microphone on my iPhone 8 plus. The lavalier microphone is a simple plug into the jack type and works on my DSLR. The phone does not recognise the mic.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to buy a 'powered' microphone?
