Just trying to get it straight in my head before I badger IT. The VOIP software we have at work doesn't quite work on our laptops. When you call someone you can only hear them intermittently on a roughly one second cycle on and off iyswim.

The software is Micollab and the system requirements are: CPU Intel Core 2 or higher 2.8Ghz

Our laptops have Intel Core i3 2.5Ghz

RAM is fine.

Cheers

Does other IT equipment on the same infrastructure work fine for VOIP, or is it specific to a specific fleet of laptops? I recall when we set ours up that some ISPs and lines can be less good for VOIP than others. Could it be implementation of the bandwidth/network usage/permissions across those laptops that is the issue?

What I'm trying to say is that it might be an issue beyond the computers that incidentally affects those machines.

We know it works on desktops we have (presumably networked rather than on WiFi though).

Have you tried a laptop using wired connection rather than Wi-Fi?

Laptops generally have the cheapest of the cheap wi-fi components. If they work OK wired, then I would try getting a USB WiFi Dongle and see if that improves matters.

Not yet. It did occur to me I should, so I'm just finishing up something before I try.

If you have an IT department, get them to fix it. We're just guessing here.

(And, run task manager when you make the next call and see if there's anything obviously maxed out. Chances are it's network or driver related but it's easy enough to rule out CPU/memory starvation).

A Core i3 at 2.5 is quite a lot faster than a Core 2 at 2.8Ghz, so I doubt if it's a CPU limit.

Crap WiFi then, either "generally in the building" or as mentioned earlier laptops built with cheap WiFi components.

My wife's Toshiba was struggling with WiFi so I bought one of these to try:

was £9.99 on Amazon.

WiFi now really good.
