Hi all,

Quick question has anyone used an ultra wide screen curved monitor for and design work (UX/UI)?

If so how is, do you notice the curve etc?

I’m trying to find a decent ultra wide screen monitor with USB C to use with my Mac but they all seem to be curved, ideally I’d prefer a non curved one but can’t see to find one.

Any recommendations, feedback would be great.

thanks

I just got a LG UltraWide 38WN95C and it works perfectly with my Macbook Pro, powers it too.

I'm not a fan of curved TVs but I think they're ideal for monitors. You won't notice it at all.

(Edit to add, sorry just noticed the design UX part. That's not my use-case but I use if for general work purposes)

I'm using two 32" BenQ PD3220U for design stuff. Not widescreen or curved nor are they cheap but they do what I need them to.

I’m using a Dell 38” U3818DW, replacing two NEC 24” 4K monitors. I found with the two monitors I was either sliding my chair from left to right or angling them in towards me. Slight curve on the ultra wide makes for better viewing

Edited to add: great with a MacBook Pro; one USB-C cable drives the monitor and its USB ports and charges the Mac

this does look tempting

https://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-38WN95C-W

as does this

https://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-38WK95C#

anyone know what the key differences are? Also my MacBook pro charges at 80w and the above output 60w via USB C does this mean my Mac won't charge also will it cause any damage to the Mac being plugged into the monitor via USB C.

thanks

I’ve been wondering whether to get the new Samsung Odyssey 49” curved screen, with the tight 1m radius.

The resolution’s a bit less than I’m used to, and I’m not certain that the thin client that I use can drive it, but it does look very nice, and I could do with more screen space for all the stuff I need to have up.

It’s a bit expensive, too, so I’d like to see one first.

I won’t charge. My MacBook Pro when connected to my benq via usb c, says it’s charging.... but it doesn’t charge it.

I think the main thing is that 38WN95C-W has Thunderbolt, it charges my Macbook fine.

Hi mate are you having any issues with the USB-C connection and the Mac, allot of people have commented that there are problems with a 2018 MBP and the U3818DW. It does look awesome tho.

No, it’s been fine - although I’m now using a Belkin thunderbolt dock to drive multiple monitors and disks as well as charge through the 1 USB cable

Although I did find that when using the USB out through the monitor then I could only drive any USB peripherals hanging off the monitor at USB 2 speeds instead of USB 3. That was part of the reason for going to the TB hub

I use Adobe creative cloud for my UI work, but prefer to work on multiple screens. Quite often I’ll have 3 monitors on the go, with an application full screen on each. I hate flicking between different windows. It’s really all down to preference though!

Ah thanks for the tips. So you have the TB doc connected to your Mac and is the Dell connected via HDMI?

Sorry about all the questions, I’m literally about to make a purchase decision.

Thanks

The Thunderbolt dock has TB/USB-C out (as well as HDMI) so that’s what I use to connect to the Dell Widescreen

The TB/USB-C carries video plus USB, so I can use the built-in KVM in the monitor to switch keyboard and mouse between that and two other inputs (in my case a Windows gaming machine for FS2020 and a Rasp Pi)

Sooo I went for the Dell U3818DW in the end and it's awesome, thanks for the tips.

Ok so it has USB ports in the back and I want to connect a webcam like the one below. Can i simply just plug that into the USB ports into the monitor, as i don't want to be running cables into my Mac, Mac is connected to the monitor via USB-C btw.

Yep. It only needs a USB 2 connection so you’re good

Degree of irony putting that price web cam on that price monitor. You care about what you see, but are less fussed about how others see you?

Yep pretty much.
