Expanding iphone

Overnight my spare iPhone has gained a bit of girth around the midriff. It’s fairly old and is on its second battery which was fitted by Apple, it had started to lose charge quickly over the last week or so. I’m guessing something has happened to the battery but what would cause it to swell? It was turned off at the time.

Yup, it's probably OK now it's expended most of its stored energy puffing up!
