I've lived at my current place for 6 years with Sky Broadband (been paying the top whack for their best wifi for a few years) and frankly my internet has been crap. The only socket in the house was right at the front (ground floor 2 bed flat) so the router had to sit there, and in order to get anything at the other end of the flat I had to use a TP Link signal repeater thingy that plugs into normal plug socket and sends the signal through the wires. The speed was never very good, and there was no chance the sky router could do the job on its own.

I'm moving to my new place tomorrow, and I've already been sent the new sky router (looks rather nice compared with the old sky block I had) so I'm hoping this might be a big change from what I'm used to?
There are so many bold claims on TV these days about signal in every room, guaranteed speeds and so on......should I expect my 4 bed house to be covered in every room just from this router? Or is that a step too far?

Your speeds are governed by the BT lines to the box on the road unless you have FTTP - sky’s supply of this is tiny.

I’m with sky and (in London) see top speeds of 12meg. My next neighbour is about 300m away and has constant speeds of over 350 meg. The only difference is that the line from theirs to mine is pretty much knackered. BT have said they’re not paying to renew it.

We’ve had to use TP link power lines for years but they’re not meant to be very good. I can download in H D but can’t stream 4K which is a pain. I’d be very interested in seeing if your new router is any good.

Also following the “what mesh network” thread to see if that might be an option.

I think like you I've been unlucky with my line into the house. I'm a house converted into two flats, and my neighbour above me has been letting me log in to her wifi before I move tomorrow, and her speeds are as bad as mine have been, so it must just be a bad line into the building.
Fingers crossed I arrive ay my new place tomorrow to something much better! I'll let you know how it's looking when I get in there.

Are you on the old sky router?

Thought I’d update.

Moved into the new place and with my new sky router I’m getting about 50mbps and strong signal throughout the house, so very happy compared with how awful it was at my previous place.

Thanks for that. I’ll have to give them a call and see what I can get.

Glad you got a result.

If they get 350 then the difference will be that they have fibre and you use copper.

Yep. But because I live behind a set of gates BT won’t even renew the squirrel nibbled line I’ve got.
It’s a proper pain in the arse.
