I am struggling to work out if a directional aerial might solve the following problem I have.

I need to get wi-fi in a storage unit that is about 8-10 metres directly below my property which is on the 3-4th floor. The storage is in a basement area with a metal door. The current mesh wifi system in my property gets some signal outside the facility at that distance, but as soon as I go into the storage facility I lose it (no doubt not helped by the metal door - which does have ventilation gaps).

I am not allowed to fit anything to the exterior of the building, but do have access to the roof space above my property which does have a 50cm overhang, and what I wondered was whether I could fit a directional aerial that would direct the signal vertically down through the (10mm or so plywood) overhang to just outside the storage facility that might be able to be picked up by a wireless device in the facility.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this might work? I appreciate it's not the usual point to point installation/set up for such things.

That sounds a bit tricky.

Is there power in the storage area?
Any chance there's a services riser you could access?
Can you get mobile phone signal down there?
How much data/connectivity do you need? Would a mobile hotspot or a router with an LTE connection be enough?

There is power, but it is independent of my property and sealed such that no services riser or equivalent, It's mainly needed to view a wireless IP camera, so (presumably?) not too demanding in terms of data speed/volume.

I think there is 4g coverage in the storage area, but I am trying to avoid that for cost and simplicity reasons.

I can't really seem to find out if:

(a) you can point a directional antenna down the way and it will actually distribute the radio that way
(b) it would push through c 10mm of plywood when pointing down through the overhang
(c) whether it would have fanned out enough at the basement area such that enough would find its way into the storage unit

The TP Link mesh unit I have have sitting by the window of my property very occasionally gets a signal (just) into the storage unit but not for long and is unreliable, so the thought was that at a directional antenna attached to a wireless access point might be a good bit stronger and better directed.
