Edit - did you say 13 years old?!?

What o/s is the desktop? If Windows 10 turn off fast boot would be my first job, followed by checking that your keyboard and mouse have the below ticked -

How often do you use it?

Try shutting it down fully rather than sleep or hibernate. If it's still iffy, try unticking fast start-up in power options. I guess wirh a rotating HDD (rather than solid state drive) it might take a good minute to boot up though.

You need to stop calling this "IT guy", you may as well ask your dog.

Windows 10 degrades really fast - faster than old versions of Windows in my experience, probably is the volume of major updates. There will be some voodoo setting in the registry that will fix it, but life is to short to try and find it. Try the HID settings above, but given that it works _most_ of the time, they are probably correct.

IMO reinstall windows. You will be amazed at the turn of speed your PC suddenly has as well.

Sounds quite reasonable, if the PC is running in standby ( as in you can hear the fan+ see a power indicator is on) but having wiggled the mouse/tapped the keyboard nothing appears to happen on the basis you still have a black screen this would suggest that the graphics card might not be waking up. It will be worth finding out if the graphics card is integrated to the motherboard or standalone and making sure the graphics card has the most up to date drivers.

Do you have another monitor you can try?

How the HP monitor is connected, VGA?

If not a monitor, try a TV.

A 3 year old Lenovo should have an HDMI output as well as VGA.

Trying to determine if it's possibly the monitor which is not waking up

I have the same issue with a 2 year old HP laptop as well, goes into sleep mode then won't wake up again. Have to hold down the power button and reboot.

Have run the troubleshooter and will see what happens, but if it continues then maybe a reinstall of windows is required.

Have you updated your BIOS / firmware? If not, do so.

Also make sure you've got all your drivers up to date. Lenovo has its own software that can keep the drivers up to date.

Just a wee bump, I ran the troubleshooter and although it didnt appear to find any problems the laptop is behaving normally again.

Thanks all!

Is fast boot turned on.

If it is try turning it off. This kills my laptop and I have to reboot it.

I'd stop it going into standby mode - go into Power & Sleep settings - choose advanced and select high performance. Change the plan settings to turn off the screen after an hour and have the computer never sleeping. Also go into Change advanced power settings and on the PCI Express options change "link state power management" to "off".
I've had problems with the sleep mode on win 10 (CPU drops to low power mode and won't speed up without a reboot) so rather than fight it I just don't let it sleep.

I can't help but think if the device needs to be fully powered down or unplugged then it's a psu fault?

A new psu is only £30 and 10 minutes to fit, blow out all the dust while you're in the case etc.
