OK - I'm not really getting it.

But smarter people than me - like you - might have some great ideas as to "why"?

Solutions looking for a problem to solve.

Phones pretty much do everything 99% of people would want. Manufacturers now need to try and sell outliers as must have features.

It's the same with TV's. Ever increasing HD is pointless, we don't really need curved screens, or 3D. It's all just fiddling with a product that doesn't need more features.

Surely that would break so easily. Or be dropped as you're trying to flip open or shut.

Either way, as mentioned above does seem to be a solution seeking out a problem.

So often my phone use is a quick look, or quick check of an app or quick reply to a message etc. I could see myself once the novelty has worn off of never rotating out the extra screen.

They had an early version on the Gadget Show a while back, the presenter who was showing it off was desperate to be nice about it and say what was good about it but you could just see the others thinking "that's a bit pointless".

It's nice that there is a phone vendor pushing the boundaries a bit, but the problem I have with these sorts of designs is that they rely on third party developers to write functionality into their app to make the best use of the feature. But it's so niche, nothing apart from the bundled apps are going to make use of it.
