I need a new chair. I have been working from home since March and will be doing so for the foreseeable future. I have been sat on an Eames DSR for 7 months and that's 7 months too long.

I've been thinking about getting a Herman Miller Mirra 2. I am 190cm (6ft 3) tall and slim, so am hoping it'll fit my size. I don't really like the style of the Aeron. The Embody is another option, but it's vastly more expensive, and I'm unconvinced it's worth it.

An issue is I cannot try any of these due to lockdown (Wales...), and even without lockdown I know of nowhere vaguely near that stocks them.

A custom Mirra 2 is ~£800, with 8 week delivery. The Embody is ~£1,200+ and a completely unworkable 20 week delivery.

Does anyone have experience of HM office chairs? Any opinions are welcome!

Thanks

I bought a “rapid delivery” embody i.e. black / black for about £800 plus VAT. Could probably have tried to get some discount as the same supplier lopped £200 off the price of a HM sit stand desk which I subsequently ordered. Custom spec will increase cost and lead time, potentially considerably in both cases.

I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one of each if needed - expensive but really nice items with very good warranty.

Unfortunately I am way too picky on colour to go used. Used is almost always black/dark grey, and I really want a white chair to fit the room.

Did you buy that before everyone started working from home? Who did you buy from? There are quite a few suppliers with varying prices.

Right now HM chairs aren't exactly cheap, and discounts appear hard to come by.

The Embody has ridiculous delivery times for custom chairs which I think rules it out.

Understood. That's the problem with office chairs; they're generally hideous. Those that aren't tend to kill your back.

I went left field with a Steelcase with a sheepskin thrown over it. Adds texture to your room (if that's what you're after), looses the 'office' bit from the chair and is also really comfortable.

I bought it at peak madness to be fair. The supplier was very helpful and I spoke with one of the owners on the phone a few times to confirm details. I’ll dig out details and send to you by PM.

ETA can’t - just send me one and I’ll reply.

I've got a Mirra in the office. It's great.

At home I've got an Ikea Markus. The Mirra is way better - I've been tempted to pick a used one up for home use.

Have you considered one of the Humanscale chairs?

I bought a used (but appears brand new to me) white leather one earlier this year, and am very happy with it.

Is there anything in particular that makes these chairs so good? Have often seen them in movies and TV shows.

I bought a Mirra 2 in the last lock down as my back was aching again.

A week in the Mirra and all was well with the world again.

I got mine for £699 and immediate delivery from Wellworking who i would thoroughly recommend.

Good luck.

I bought a really good secondhand bargain Aeron for £150 off eBay, after years of Staples "Executive" "Leather" office chairs its a revelation and would buy a new one, if you use it every day dont sit on a £100 POS from Staples that creaks, makes you sweat and isnt anywhere near as comfortable as it looks.

A good chair really is a revelation. I feel like that and a decent mattress can be life changing. If you’re desk bound you’re likely spending 2/3rds of your life on one of them.

This is what I'm looking at now. I'm considering a full white custom with butterfly back and alloy base. 8 week delivery from everywhere. Wellworking seem to be well regarded though, and have been good with comms. The cheapest is elsewhere though, but only if I forego the option for return, which doesn't seem sensible.

One random question I have about the Mirra is how easy is it to clean? Is the seat/back material fairly resistant to marks?

I ordered a Mirra 2. I made sure to purchase somewhere with easy returns if it doesn’t work for me.

I was given an 11 week delivery date after order. The website mentioned 8 weeks, but that hit around Christmas so stretched it out. After a little back and forth I now have a 5 week delivery, which is much better!

I’ve had mine since Spring as advised and I just vacuum it once a week and it looks great. No marks or scuffs but in fairness I haven’t dropped any food on it either.

How have you found it, and which retailer did you order from?

I treated myself to a new HM Aeron over Christmas; I realise the looks are a tad marmite but it just works and is rock solid. No hesitation in recommending HM as a manufacturer.

It came from a supplier in Norfolk who was kind enough to let me collect after trying a couple for size. I’m 6’2” and powerfully built ( of course); plumped for a C but think a B would also have been fine.

The front tilt option is brilliant.

The first two weeks hurt my lower back. However, I'd been sat on a Vitra Eames DSR chair for 9 months...

Now it's very good. I am very glad I spent the money and purchased a new chair!

I used Wellworking and would highly recommend them. The price was good (slightly custom chair), and they were happy to answer the many questions I had. I originally had an 11 week delivery, but after a little discussion got that down to 5 weeks. They drove it to my house from London, which perhaps indicates the profit margin in these chairs!
