With the lockdown now in action, we'd like to get the in-laws a smartphone for video calls, and pay for a plan that they can use for international video calls also. Having not had a phone in the UK for nearly 20 years, I'm a bit lost. Also the in-laws are mobile-phobic - they don't have a mobile phone and are paranoid about the cost of calls, esp international calls.

Just for reference, the phone package I have here includes all my national and international calls, plus the phone (iPhone XS) plus 200GB data/mth for AU$100/mth (say GBP60) over 24 months. I've no idea how that compares with UK packages.

Where do I look? Is is possible to get the same sort of package as I have here, whereby the phone plus all national/international call are covered for a fixed fee per month? They don't need the data, just the voice/video calls. Ta!

Can't they use WhatsApp or Skype using WiFi instead to make the calls?

Or if you do want a sim try Lebara mobile, they've got a few pay monthly bundles.
Theres even an unlimited data/voice/texts/int calls package for £35

For the phone just buy any mid range pay as you go phone from Tesco/carphone warehouse for about £100+ and use the other sim in it.

As above, WhatsApp calls via WiFi should do the trick. If they already have broadband (and a device to run it on), it's a no cost option.

Thanks - they have no internet connection, so no wifi - and no chance of getting one! Will check out the phone option mentioned

They can still Whatsap/Skype/Facetime etc via 4G, doesn't use too much data. No need for international calls. You should be able to get them a SIM with 2GB data for not too much.

Giff Gaff use the O2 network, so you need to make sure they can get coverage in their home. There are loads of options in the UK, competitive, so cheap.

Can you send them one of your old phones?

Their house may be in a BTOpenZone area (they cover massive areas) so wifi may still be an option.

Googling suggests it is possible to call Australia by using a local rate number. I guess they do a connection online somehow
