Has anyone got one, and how do you find it?

I was considering buying two - one for us and one for my mum, but is it worth it? The main reason is because i'm sick of trying to get me, wife and 19 month old framed on my phone when we do weekly calls. My mum is far enough away that it'll be relevant post-covid, and she's not averse to a bit of tech. I had been holding out for some black friday offers, but i can see they've now reduced them from £149 to £129. It's actually worse than the previous buy 2 get £50 off offer they had before.

If i do go ahead, i'll either have it in the living room going through an AV amp or in the kitchen which would be straight to TV. Has anyone run one through an AV amp, and was it any use?

I went the Google Nest Home screens for the same issue.

Paid £49 each for them and when not used for calls they are digital photo frames driven by Google Photos and pre-structured albums ... work perfectly.

my wife suggested these too.. we have a regular google nest mini already. Is it any different from just opening whatsapp/facebook on a tablet though?

Nest Hubs don't have a camera though you need the Hub Max for that. Black Friday deals have them at around £170

We've got a Max in the kitchen. Great little thing. Don't use it for calls though - photo frame, recipes, smart home control, radio

Sorry you are right, the regular nests are just dotted around the house for the photo Frame etc... it was indeed max's for the video calls.

They use Google Duo for the calling I believe so there isn't actually any app involved you just ask it to video call whoever and it does.

I’m pretty set that I want a webcam for the tv type of device rather than a standalone unit. Lots of people seem to be moaning about the current Black Friday offer, so I’ll hold on and see if they improve

I use my phone and screen mirror it to the TV, Most modern TVs can do this. Put the phone at the bottom of your TV and stand back. They do the same at the other end and we use WhatsApp video calls or zoom. It works fine. The only issue I can think of is the microphone, you have to speak loudly...ish.
Takes a bit of setting up, but once you know how away you go.

We have a portal tv that we use to video call my parents who live abroad and also have one, mostly so they can see our toddlers running around the room and chat to them on the big screen, works brilliantly and that way it zooms in and out to follow the movement around the room in really good.

We used to use Skype for tv (after purchasing an overpriced Sony camera for the Tv) but Microsoft have scrapped Skype for TV.

You can see the way it follows the action in the advert here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN1t1-gPDtw

100% Recommend it.

The only reason the advert shows everyone in the screen is because they are standing back away from the camera.
Stick your phone on cheap mini phone tripod on a table or chair 6 feet away from you and you'll get exactly the same framing.
Cast it to the telly and you have a gigantic video call on the wall.
Buy a portal if you want a portal, but it doesnt really do anything your phone doesnt. The following round the room is only zooming and panning a smaller section of the view. It still uses a normal camera and doesnt actually rotate the camera around the room.
