I noticed on Aliexpress a 15.6 lcd portable screen for 80 quid.

If got me thinking could i use a desktop PC through this, as i currently use a laptop but would prefer a pc but the portability of a laptop, which this screen would offer.?

I don't think I see any benefit to it!

You won't be able to used it whilst on the move or on the sofa.
Longer to set up.
No battery power.
Screen is no bigger than a medium sized laptop.
More bulky to carry.

You could buy a laptop and the portable screen, which would allow you to work dual screen then.

it is portable and wireless and touch screen, so yes you can.

PC once set up into sleep mode shouldn't be an issue

I could but the whole point is a pc with better upgrade capability, looking at dedicated graphics card and the portability of a laptop with a desktop if i want to use it.

I have two of these 15.6inch screens albeit the versions without the built in battery / touch. I use them when working out in the garden during the summer connected to a Raspberry Pi.

Pros:
  • Very, very lightweight
  • Not a problem in your case but mine can be powered off a powerbank for most of the day
Cons:
  • Very disappointing brightness, even when indoors. White comes out more like a muddy blue grey. Rubbish compared to a proper laptop screen and cannot compete with a dedicated monitor.
  • Can be temperamental on connections
  • Colours are dull
  • The built in stands are very flimsy and don't give you any of the angle / height adjustments you benefit from with a normal desktop monitor
Here's a picture taken on my camera phone of one of them on the left compared to my dedicated HP Z24n monitor on the right hand side. The only thing these cheap monitors have really going for them is portability, I can't recommend them for anything else.

Oh I see. Well you never said that in your OP. So is the idea that you use it at home as a tablet effectively, but streaming from a desktop PC?

The downsides I was thinking of were mainly about moving it to and from a location such as a place of work and using it whilst travelling.

I'm still sceptical as Windows is a bit fiddly to use solely from a touch screen and the Windows onscreen keyboard is nothing like as good as what you would use on a mobile phone.

If your current laptop isn't ancient and has Windows 10 you can project your desktop PC to the laptop screen and use it in the same way as you are proposing and you would have the benefit of a physical keyboard. I just tried that and it's not bad actually. There is some lag and gaming on it definitely wouldn't be an option. I don't know if the screen if you are looking at would also suffer from it.

It's an interesting idea. If you buy it let us know what it's like.
