Apologies in advance if this is a Noob question............

One of my kids is thinking of buying a Huawei Matebook and we were talking yesterday about whether she was going to get one as part of Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Another of my kids was in the room and listening in.

Today the other kid starts getting advertys on her FB feed about Huawei Matebooks. She's never googled them, she's not even been aware that Huawei did laptops prior to the conversation. So why would FB suddenly start sending her Huawei Matebook adverts?

Yes to both (for me).

The child who is getting the Matebook uses Chrome but not FB. I'm not sure what browser the child with FB uses.

Exactly the same situation! The child who is after a Matebook doesn't use FB. The child who didn't even know what a Matebook was suddenly starts getting Matebook adverts on her FB.

p.s. Don't you think the GLS looks a bit....ugly?

Chrome is made by google. Google like targeted advertising.

You and your kids are sitting at home. You have one IP address. One person in the family starts browsing for Matebooks. Unless you are all signed into Chrome, Google just know that a machine in the house is browsing for Matebooks. Thus the rest of the machines in the house will get targeted for ads.

No one is listening. You’re giving information to Google and they are using it to advertise to you. If you don’t like this then a combination of Adblock and Privacy Badger will eliminate all of it.

What gets me is that the technology is so dumb really. It only advertises stuff to you that you have already researched. For example, a few years ago I bought a shipping container. Used Chrome to research it, Gmail to order it. Did I get relevant ads? No, I got ads for more containers. Don’t want more containers, I’ve already bought three. What I actually want is industrial racking .....

Locallly on your network, yes... but they all go out the same front door and that is what Google will see.

The router will allocate private IP addresses so it knows where to send what information but the internet facing side of the router will have an IP address which is shared across all devices accessing from that network. It's that IP address that providers see and means it's shared, generally, across a household.

If you think the only information they can see is your IP address I think you're in for a rude awakening

confused Has this thread been edited? I can’t for the life of me find where that’s mentioned.
