I'm planning to buy a new refillable inkjet printer to replace our old wired Canon that is no longer compatible with Windows 10.

Proposed Set up is as follows:

- Printer to live in my office (spare room) which has no wired ethernet connections.
- I use a macbookpro and wifi to work in there (so also keen to avoid a wired connection to the printer and use wifi)
- Wife wants to be able to send jobs to the printer from her office where she uses a Windows10 pc with a wired ethernet connection (no wifi) that goes to our router via a switch downstairs

I guess my question is if the wife wants to send a job to the printer form her PC is it just a case of ensuring the printer (in the spare room) is turned on? i.e. presumably the printer will connect to our network via the wifi every time it is turned on and she can send a job to it via the wired network connection?

Anything else to consider?

I wanted a similar setup, but the printer I got could only do wifi OR wired. Not both at the same time. It is an HP LaserJet Pro M102W. So even though it sits next to the PC, it has to communicate with it via wifi. I was very surprised, but it was one or the other. smash

You should be fine. I've got an HP OfficeJet which is connected to my home network using the built-in WiFi. It actually lives a cupboard which has power sockets inside for the boiler thermostat.

I can print from my desktop PC (cabled to the router) or either of my laptops (one work, one personal) which use the WiFi. I let the printer go into power save mode and it wakes up to print with no human intervention.

Is that Wifi Direct or something?

Mine, LaserJet m479, is hard wired to the router and I can print from my laptop when using the laptop wirelessly as it communicated with the printer via the router. I used the HP inkjet I had for 10yrs prior in the same way too.
I don't think so. But the printer could only be setup for wifi OR USB connection.

It works fine, I had just assumed it would be able to do both. If my PC didn't have a wifi connection it would have been annoying!

I deleted my post as I thought it might be confusing.

In your case the printer would normally be wirelessly connected to the router and it wouldn't make any difference whether the PC was wired or wireless for its connection to the router.

Maybe if you were trying to also connect directly by USB that might have messed things up?

I've generally found wireless printers to be iffy - lucky with my own set-up that it's next to the router so just use wired ethernet.
