Bulk photo editing / resizing software
Discussion
I have a load of images that I need to sort out (for web use). These are all product images with white backgrounds.
They are in all shapes & sizes & I need them all to be square i.e. I need to take an image that might be 800x600 and overlay it onto a white background so that it becomes 800 x 800. The next one might be 1000 x 600 so I'd want that to be 1000 x 1000 etc etc.
I can do it manually but it i will take forever so wondering if anyone knows of a piece of software that might do this.
Once I have them all a consistent shape then there are plenty of tools around to make them all consistent dimensions, bulk rename files etc etc but am stuck finding something that will get me to a 1:1 ratio on the dimensions first.
Any ideas?

Every single thing you mention can be done by Lightroom.
Its industry standard software that is designed to do all that, even easier than Photoshop.
You can also apply bulk colour edits too and the interface makes it easy to even whizz through the photos one by one tweaking them, checking, selecting and organizing them too.
This is a serious answer, not just a list of every piece of software that has a resize function.

He doesn't want to resize though does he? He wants to automatically change the canvas size to a square of the largest side dimension. Its industry standard software that is designed to do all that, even easier than Photoshop.

Irfanview has a powerful batch processing tool and although I'm not in front of my PC now to check I think it can do what you want.
It's also free.
