I have a synology 218j - currently just use it for one step in the back up process for our photos & phones.

It seems to do this reasonably well.

However the time has come that I need to admit that the couple of hundred cd's I have laying around could be managed more effectively and might actually get listened to if they were available digitally.

So can I upload them to the synology & access them away from home - probably via iphone or android?

We have SMART TV & Sound bar - if I could acces via them great, if not not the end of the world.

Around the house we have Alexa devices - would be good if we could access via these to but again not essential.

The remote access from digital is most important I think.

My usual answer to stuff like this it to recommend plex server but it might be pushing your 218j to run that comfortably. The synology media server (audio server) is perfectly serviceable though and would do what you want. The music would be accessible via your internal devices and your phone both inside the house and remotely - if you have your router set up to allow remote access to the synology.

I would rip some cd’s and check out the built-in audio server.

I think my Synology NAS is the 218J.
If so, I've done exactly this.

The Synology music server works sort of, but it's ugly as sin and clunky. I could not get it to show album art whatever it said it could do.

So I run Minimserver (free) on the Synology NAS, with the Minimserver inspection tool run occaisionally from my desktop PC to update the database with new albums.
That serves music files (flac and MP3 in my case) to a Raumfeld Connector (£100 ish), which itself is plugged into the back of my aplifier via RCA plugs.

I use either Bubble UpnP or HiFi Cast on a tablet (£150 ish) to browse the files on the NAS, and send the files to the Raumfeld.

I rip CDs to flac via my desktop computer using Windows Media Player or Tune Browser.

Took a while to get it up and going but it works OK now.
Always a bit fiddly with Various Artists complication albums.

So it's all v possible !
