I'm sure there was a thread on this recently but the search has failed me so I'll ask again.

It's a not uncommon situation: elderly relative living alone, has a computer & phone but is physically a bit shaky so setting up Skype calls & the like is very hit & miss. What would be good is a device where he can just say "Call X" & the video call is made or if someone video calls in then it's auto-answered. I'm pretty sure this sounds like what an Echo Show does, but have a couple of questions:

Which Echo Show? does it have to be the Show 10 & what are it's advantages over the Show 8?

What devices/services can call in? Does it have to be from another Echo Show or can you call in on Skype/Messenger/Whatsapp?

How do you set it up - ie when you connect it to your wireless network how does it find the people on the contact list (not a phone number obviously).

There's an issue in the the relative is abroad so visiting them to set it up isn't possible: could it be pre-configured over here so they just turn it on & it will work?

Any help would be gratefully received.

I use Echo show for the parents with a sticker that says "Call Brother D" on it and it calls my devices. Job done.

Haven’t tried a Show, but it works fine on a bog standard echo. I’ve set my mum up with this.

Some set up is needed, but you can do it remotely from the app. Mainly linking names to numbers - so when she says “dial Fred” it calls the right number.

The only setup needed is connecting it to the right Amazon account, and then getting it on her WiFi. Everything else (so far) has been remote.

Can also do it on Google Mini etc, if she has an Android phone.
