Looking for voice dictation software that works well but must not be cloud based - will be used for medical notes so issues with confidentiality.

What are people using?

What are the perceived issues, EMIS-web and ICE are prime examples of cloud based medical applications which have zero confidentiality issues along with numerous secondary care PAS’ ?

Just want to be sure not to have any issues - this would be something to buy off her own bat rather than trust supplied.

The trust trialed the speach recognition module in BigHand but decided not to buy. OH liked it and found it worked well - she is a very slow typist and they are down on staff at the moment so her old method of using a digital dictaphone and emailing it to get typed up isn't working.

Bit of a workaround but you could dictate to Siri which will create a note that can be emailed.

Also the google notes software on android is outstanding and can even differentiate between voices for note taking in meetings (appreciate that’s a different scenario to now)

Years ago I used dragon naturally speaking that was a mare to get trained to your voice but once done it was near flawless.

Siri is cloud based.

We have installed Olympus kit (software comes with their dictation hardware though) for several companies in professional fields. Can save to local folder on server and then just share out to those that need to transcribe. Their support is first class too. Not sure if this helps if your looking for software only.

the problem is that all the accurate dictation is only really available via the cloud because of the vast computing resources required to crunch it.

Probably Dragon.

Worked for a company that specialised in dictation/voice rec technologies about 5 years ago, not sure how far the software has come on in that time mind you.

True but you can turn Siri off and still use on device dictation on iOS.

Windows 10 has some built in dictation stuff now but Dragon is still by far the leader for the traditional non cloud speech to text product.

Dragon was pretty good when I used it 10 years ago, so it's probably very good now. It has a variant for standalone computers, so no "cloud".

A lot of hospitals use overseas dictation with a legitimate patient confidentiality process. But the audio file goes to a human in indonesia/malaysia/etc and comes back as rtf or doc

Occasionally they ask for you to use a patient identifier, Eg hospital number or NHS number instead of name on the audio and you merge back the full identifying details on receipt of output.
Have done this, or rather have worked for trusts that do this

I think Dragon Home is still offline? But if you want low WERs then I'm afraid cloud is where this is trending. It will be a while before local solutions catch up. One of the reasons why voice recognition in cars is so patchy.

Dictation or transcription? Many of the above are transcription. Also there are cloud systems that are compliant for healthcare privacy, so cloud in itself is not excluded if this is your concern as others have pointed out. I use Dictate + Connect app which is available for iPhone and android and can upload to a variety of places (including non-cloud solutions). It also offers medical transcription if that is what you need and can encrypt files for an added layer of privacy..
