Hi Pistonheads

My iphone 7 has a defective charging port and Apple are not accepting responsibility, they say I have damaged it. I am pretty angry as I did not and I had only spent £50 on a new battery (changed by Apple) 5 weeks prior to it failing to turn on. I bought the phone direct from Apple and it lasted 4 years and 6 weeks, with the battery failing after 3 years.

If I had traded in my iphone 7 for a new iphone I could have got £80 off a iphone . I have lost that opportunity now because it won't turn on.

So to replace it , I looked at the iPhone SE as I like the size as its the same as my iphone 7 but I am aware the battery doesn't last long. So I am looking at the iPhone12 mini which will set me back £699.

I feel I would have been £130 better off if I hadnt replaced the battery and traded it in. But even then 4 years use with constant recharging imo is not what I had been sold by Apple sales who said my iPhone 7 would last for years and years.

I want to recoup at least some of the money but Apple arent helping.I am thinking of purchasing an iPhone 12 from John lewis as I am worried the same thing could happen again, but thought John lewis may be more helpful should it also have a fault

What do you think, please?

At 4 years old if you had purchased from John Lewis they wouldn’t assist in anyway so not really much difference there. If you want to recoup some money just sell the 7 for spares or repair.

It did last for years and years. 4years out of a phone is excellent value IMO.

Most android handsets would have packed up well before now.

I’d move it on for spares / repair and call it a day.

I would say it performed well for 2.5 years then the battery deteriorated , I think at £600 for 4 years it is not long enough, especially as I am not heavy user . An Apple sales rep told me last week he would have expected it to have lasted at least 10 years

4 years out of any handset is good going, so yeah, it did last for years and years.

My android handsets are going strong at 2 and less strong, but functional, at 4 years. My work iPhone 6s is not yet 2 and is alright, but battery is definitely getting weaker.

That apple sales rep need to give his head a wobble. I'm on a 4 year IPhone 7. I expect to have to change it in the next year or two. No chance it would last 10 years.

What they told you was a load of bks. Apple list phones obsolete at around 8-9 years and vintage around the 6-7 year mark.

If you bought a TV at £600 and it lasted 2 years and then started to not perform well before breaking altogether at 4 years would you be happy?

iPhones reduce in performance with IOS upgrades - seems to Apple's advantage

Yes because that works out at 41p per day to watch TV bargain.

A 2018 survey worked out the average lifespan of an Apple device was 4 years and 3 months.

You can't really compare TVs and Phones - everything has a difference obsolescence range. TVs expected range is 5 to 7 years for an LED but depending on the brand you can easily get 10 years.

Probably fluff in the port. Get a wooden toothpick and clean it out

This! It’s amazing (and a bit disgusting) what comes out.

I have a cut down plastic straw in I store in my phone case exactly for this purpose.

I think 4 years is a pretty decent life to get out of a phone.

Probably not fluff as Apple have said it has a defective port.

Get the port repaired for £35, sell on Gumtree / Facebook for £100-£130

Personally, i think you've had fair use from the expecting life of the handset.

However, if you purchased the handset directly from Apple, you could try and write to them on the basis of this:

Yeah I realised as soon as I hit post ... I forgot my 7 had a wireless charging case on it at the time.
