My kids are moaning constantly about glitching internet when playing Xbox over wi fi.
To negate this I have temporarily run a couple of ethernet cables plugged directly into the router downstairs and ran them to their bedrooms.
I have a BT Whole Home wi fi system with 3 discs and whilst it's better than the Sky wi fi it replaced, I think hard wiring is the way to go for their needs, and subsequently could also run a 3rd cable to my office for a solid connection there as well.

Now, do I need to just run one ethernet cable from the router, into say the loft, then add this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8495459?istCompany...tongue outla-978927273034%7ccrid:426824271970%7cnw:g%7crnd:16480757161441324749%7cdvc:c%7cadp:%7cmt:%7cloc:9044862&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=9682393656&utm_term=8495459&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=99402305236&utm_custom2=534-693-8244&gclid=Cj0KCQiAlZH_BRCgARIsAAZHSBnqC-KsUAngjwTmEsVgPOoktB3Fej7ZINtHDeiX-oiAi4Y2PGY0KhMaAsmZEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

and then run 3 ethernet cables to the rooms in question?

Yes that would do it just fine. Personally I like the small Netgear switches & you might think about a bigger one for future expansion but they are a bit pricey from Argos. This 8 port is £22 from Amazon but delivery is after Christmas:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-Ethernet-Unmanage...

The TP Link is £12 from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-SG105S-Etherne...

The 8 port is £19 & you can get it today if you are very quick:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-SG108S-Etherne...

Awesome, thanks for your confirmation.
I'm in no hurry to get it sorted before Christmas but will get one ordered and tackle it in the next couple of weeks.

Cheers and happy Christmas!

As said above, go for the 8 port switch. Requirements always grow,

I'd go for cat7 cable - it's cheap enough now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reulin-Ethernet-Halogen-C...

It's always a good idea to double up on cables. Running them is the time consuming/expensive bit, so a spare is always a good idea.

I swear by these https://www.amazon.co.uk/devolo-Magic-2-2400-WiFi-...

We have a 3 storey house with one of these on each floor. Rock solid Wifi and we have one plugged into a switch that serves TV and AV receiver whilst another is in my son's room wired to his PS4. No complaints and no need for running cables all over the house.

Different to other mesh systems which use radio to communicate & never needs rebooting either.

If it really matters to their gaming, you will always have a better experience over wired rather than wifi.
Latency is key.

Agree, they are brilliant and reliable, even working on different consumer units.

As good as you may think that is, it'll never beat wires for performance. Wi-Fi is a half duplex medium, only 1 thing can be talking at any one time.

If you have the ability to run wiring, do it.

If you can, wire especially where performance is needed or where the equipment doesnt move location e.g. streaming, data backups, gaming, More relaible more stable, more speed,.......just MORE.
Thats not to say wifi will be a problem, just that its ultimately a compromise between speed relability and convenience

Wireless and home plugs are fine for home use, unless running cables is easy.

How many file transfers is your average home user going to do?

My house runs fine on a Netgear mesh system over 3 floors and a powerline adaptor out to the garage for my dvr.

I run an 8 way switch behind the tv for the tv, NAS, Xbox, PS, Sky, Heatmiser hub.

My kids connect up all their gear wirelessly and I cannot remember the last time something stopped working or they complained of slow connectivity.
