Try an android device.
I remember having trouble setting mine up using my iPad, set up was fine on my android phone.

Now they are set up the alexa app is fine on the iPad, it was just the initial WiFi connection that was the problem.

Either you are a complete novice at using technology and have absolutely no understanding of how to use wifi or it's not working as it should. These things are pretty much plug and play, they are so simple to set up!

Sorry not very helpful other than try sending it back for a replacement!

Have you put it into setup mode? You then need to connect your phone to the WiFi hot spot it creates. Then all should be good.

Have you reset it, as opposed to just restarting it?

Press and hold the action button for 25 seconds - LEDs should turn orange when it’s done.

This puts it into factory setting mode so you can try again.

Who bought the Echo? If it was bought from Amazon, I think it will be pre-registered to the buyer's Amazon account unless they ticked the "this is a gift" box. If it's been preregistered, you may have to ask the buyer to deregister it before you can register it to your account.

If you use your phone as a wifi hotspot, I don't think you can configure an Echo will the Alexa app on the same phone.

Normally, you plug the Echo in, and it plays a welcome message. It will also create a temporary wifi network.

You use the Alexa app on your phone to connect to the temporary wifi network. If you phone displays a warning that the wifi network has no internet and asks you to choose a different network, ignore it.

Use the Alexa app to search for your normal wifi network and connect to it. Once this is done, the Echo's temporary wifi network will be turned off and your phone will reconnect to your normal network.

How far are you getting, and what error message do you get?

Thanks all. Not a novice lol
I did get as far as being able to select the echo hotspot. Amazon wa or something. Still no joy.
It does ask for my password for my own WiFi but then fails to pair.
Done the reset too
I’ll have another go in a bit

Re comment regarding registration. I have noticed that when I get to putting WiFi password in,the pre filled box above suggests I should use the buyers ID. The buyer presumably has an Amazon account but doesn’t live with me

If you're connecting to the dot's own Wi-Fi, and it is asking for your Wi-Fi password and then failing to connect, I'd be tempted to temporarily change the Wi-Fi password to something trivial and try again.

A dot I bought a while back had a similar issue - just would not connect to wifi. I had a rather frustrating call with Amazon Support who said that everything would be ok as soon as it had downloaded an update, oblivious to my protestations that downloading an update would be hard in the absence of wifi. However, it seems they were right - the dot _was_ connected to the wifi, it just wasn't acknowledging the fact, and was actually just sitting there trying to download the update.

It might be worth getting as far through the setup process as you can and then just leaving it to its own devices for a few hours.

Edit to add - your router may have a way of allowing you to check what devices are on the network. Worth a look if so. Once I understood what was going on I could see the Dot had been allocated an address and was busy transferring data, even while it was reporting that it couldn't connect to wifi!

You can prompt an update by leaving it one and pressing mute, after a while it assumes its not being used and starts the update process. However, I cant find any way of checking if it is happening and finished although your method of checking from the router might work.

Have you had a hunt around in the TV settings? Often you can make it switch on with a particular signal source selected automatically.

During lockdown, my mother in law phoned me to say her computer was "dead". Normally it goes into sleep mode and she is able to wake it with the keyboard or mouse, but this time it won't go on. She assured me she had tried "everything" including trying the power button.

So I went to her house, pressed the power button and on it came.

Amazon sent me another. Super service, came in 24 hours.
Still no go
I can get it working perfectly if I use my phones hotspot. So the echo is not faulty.
It seems my Huawei(Three) router may be the culprit. There’s not much info on the net but a bit about these routers not playing ball
Because of my location I have mobile 4g broadband. Plenty of speed, runs all other things in the home that need WiFi but seems not the echo.

A quick search found a few reports of similar problems with Huawei routers. The solution seems to be set your phone's wifi hotspot to the same ssid and password as the router and complete the Dot set-up via the phone. Obviously you need to turn the router off first and back on afterwards.
