Apologies if this has been asked about before but we have a Sony Bravia television and have problems accessing BBC iPlayer. I believe it is an issue with Sony televisions but think a lot of our issue is made worse by the poor internet signal.

In short the television shows one bar (of three) for the internet connection for a lot of the time. I have measured it on my phone using an application and whilst the speed is quite good the signal is up and down and often very poor.

My wife wants to get an internet signal range extender. The router is in the upstairs bedroom on the opposite side of the house (maybe 15m away through wall and ceiling) and my wife says she does not want to pay £100 to get get Virgin to move it. Are they just gimmicks?

Is it worth it and if so any recommendations on which one to get?

Any help appreciated.

If you can't get a network cable from the router to the TV then try a pair of Powerline extenders. Devolo & TP Link seem to be quite well regarded but results can be a bit variable dependeing on your mains wiring.

Thank you for that. Any links? Or do I just search for Devolo wifi booster?

I personally wouldn't use a Wi-Fi booster, although you can get powerline units with Wi-Fi built into them. The ones I'd suggest are more of a network extender so you have a network port at each end & just use a cable (usually supplied) to plug into the router at one end & the TV at the other.

TP Link on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?keywords=Powerline+Netw...

Cheap TP Link that wouldn't break the bank to test if they work:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-PA4010KIT-Powerline-Co...

Higher speed version:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-PA7010PKIT-Passthrough...

These are passthrough versions so you don't lose a mains outlet:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-PA7010PKIT-Passthrough...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-PA4010PKIT-Passthrough...

Devolo models all seem to have Wi-Fi & cost quite a bit more. If you particularly want Wi-Fi then post again.

Can you plug it in directly with a 30m or 40m Ethernet cable for a tenner?

I had an issue with my Sony TV, in that it wouldn’t connect to the WiFi, but it would let me watch Netflix. Apparently it is quite a common software issue and if your clock isn’t set to the correct time, it won’t connect to the internet. You need to tick an option for automatic updates.

I did this and everything is fine now!

I had problems with my Sony Bravia - no internet. I unplugged the TV completely for about 10 minutes and then it internet worked. Worth a try?

I have also had this problem this weekend. Weirdly netflix would still stream but the other streaming services wouldn’t.

I did the tv reset thing after exhausting all other possibilities. Plug out for 5 mins, worked a treat?

Mine's wired in and still stops working now and again. Nothing I can do - hard reset TV, resettting router etc - makes it work, so switch on wifi and it's fine. Then I'll try wired a few days later and it'll work fine.

Is it purely Wireless issues?

I have a Sony Bravia too which behaves strangely sometimes.

Doesn't connect or does but can't access apps etc.

Frustrating. I've done factory reset etc.

How long have you had issues with accessing iPlayer? Could it be that your model is no longer supported? https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/recen...

Probably just better to buy a fire stick and use that

Am also with Virgin and we all know their crap wifi, have these installed https://www.argos.co.uk/product/6214467
My main PC and router is upstairs and have always had a problem with the telly which is also upstairs getting a decent signal until I bought a pair of those, they work flawlessly and very easy to setup and you can also add more around the house.
Couple of weeks back got another pair (cannot buy them in single units) as wifes pc which is downstairs kept dropping wifi signal, now no more I cannot get an internet connection.

My Sony TV works fine with wireless but it does need a strong signal. Until I bought a mesh wifi setup it would really struggle (not connecting, buffering etc) whereas the Virgin V6 box underneath would have no problems.

Same seemed to happen with a Firestick I had on another Sony TV until I bought a HDMI extension cable and brought the stick out from behind the screen,
