Designing a bit of kit that requires a wired, duplex serial communication link sending occasional ascii characters over around 5 meters at 19200 baud. Both ends terminate at UART pins on a microcontroller. The obvious solution is to use a tried and tested rs232 transceiver ic at both ends but it seems a bit old fashioned. What other method should I consider ?

RS-422 if it's point to point.

Differential is nice for noise rejection but I do then need extra wires. I was hoping to power the remote device via the cable. TX ,RX, 0v and supply so just 4wires, or 3 core screened . Think I would need 6 wires for a full duplex differential system but it is worth considering.

It’s not far or fast so you could use centre-tapped pulse transformers, get differential nose immunity and power through the pairs to keep conductor count down.
