Back in the era of XP or perhaps Vista I recall stringing together a number of video clips made on a camera and then adding a commentary to the edited video afterwards. I think it was some software that came with the operating system. Can't seem to see anything included with Win10. What should I seek out to do the job ?

It has to be simple to use and doesn't need any effects or trick features. Just need to top and tail some clips, link them together and add a commentary afterwards.

Lossless cut https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut/releases

Will save a selected part of a video, no encoding, very fast

Will join selected video clips, no encoding, very fast

Am a Linux user and use a Lossless Cut App Image

The Windows version is very likely of identical operation

Really good free software

If you are needing to join video clips of different sizes/quality/formats etc, Lossless Cut isn't for you

Only a video editor with encoding features can achieve the above

I use Davinci Resolve like this.

It could be a terrible suggestion as it doesn't meet your requirement of not having a bunch of extra features at all, but I find it not too difficult to not look at them.

They will all be of the same format and quality, from the same camera.

This for features or the built in Photos app in Windows 10 (but that is more limited than the old movie maker).

If these are clips already on your phone, you really cannot beat InShot.
I used to import clips to the pc and edit on Premiere Pro, but have found this so much quicker and easier for basic trimming, joining, transitions, titles and text etc.
I use a Galaxy S9 and am amazed at the speed of editing and rendering. I've tried all the others like Kinemaster, PhotoDirector etc and this is the most intuitive and easy to use. It really is more powerful than you think and not a silly app aimed at simpletons, its just really well put together.
