If that's really all you need it for, I'd go the tablet route myself. Even if you're not an Apple person, I'd still buy an iPad over any other tablet.

For that use, Chromebook all the way. No hassle, cheap as chips.
Asus Chromebook Flip will be well under your budget, nice rigid metal chassis, good big touchscreen.
We've had one for a year now and nothing but praise.

Not great for email or on the lap though. I actually much prefer a simple chromebook. I like a clamshell design as you close it and it's fairly protected, can put it up and angle it the way you want.
Add to that that most tablets are about <10", or very expensive.

I wouldn’t recommend chrome book as you can’t install proper software on them. How about a thin and light laptop with an SSD that will be speedy enough for everything you need and have the flexibility to run any software you need as well.

Something like this?

For banking, Youtube and email I'd definitely be looking at a tablet or Chromebook. Portability, battery life and no extra cash spent of things you don't need

OP requirements do not appear to include the need for installation of proper software.

I'd agree with others that Chromebook is probably the most suitable in preference to a tablet, especially for typing emails.

Except the OP mentions that he has a PC that he will be away from for nearly 3 months. There are times when only a proper computer will do, and since he mentioned a PC in his post, I thought I would suggest a cheaper alternative. The i7 machine he used as an example is massive overkill for his needs but the one I mentioned isn't and will have better battery life as a result.

thanks All
No software loading required
just a few apps (dash camera etc)

I will not replace my desktop (main use day to day)
the tablet (samsung) would be ok as I have Samsung Mobile so am used to the system.
just £600+ seems sepndy.
but
I would hate to buy cheap and regret it for another few quid.

seems like the laptop I am in low-mid range
same money gets a higher range tablet.

Defo not getting an ipad tho,
have one here and TBH I am not keen. plus the banking apps stopped far too soon for my liking.

I have both in the basket but am wavering over pressing buy
John Lewis offer another year warranty than currys
but in reality I will not be in the UK much.

I want to be able to access banking to transfer ££ whilst travelling and waiting on shippers.
be able to get to gmail and BT internet accounts.

the keyboard case on the Samsung tablet has reasonable reviews and is on offer as a bundle at the moment
