What's the most likely cause of not being able to write to a laptop HDD whilst still being able to read from it?

We had a similar problem recently on a CNC machine,
turned out to be a password problem.

Think this is a HDD problem as diskchecking software says component failure although I note the write cache is disabled.

Probably time to go here.

HD's are probably the weakest link in any machine.

Have you seen any windows errors prior to the failure?.

Sometimes if laptops are banged during use it can be enough to cause a HD failure. I recently did the same to one at work, but this one would only read certain parts of the disk.
