Broadband: How is it activated?
Discussion
Morning,
Firstly my understanding of such stuff is limited and I'm being given contradictory information by my provider and thus just trying to understand.
I bought a house, it had an existing line which the vacating owners cancelled. I arranged a home phone and fibre broadband deal via BT about two weeks ago and they advised an engineer was booked for the 19th and that's when things would go live as it were.
About 10 days ago, I plugged in my landline phone and found it was working with my new number and has done ever since. No issues there. Soon after, an Openreach engineer called to say he was doing pre-engineer visit checks in our area and could he confirm what the issues were.
I advised the phone worked and so we didn't need a fault looked at nor a new line etc however he did line checks from the house to the hub a few streets away and confirmed all was well and that was that - line present, correct and functioning so just wait until it's activated.
My BT hub arrived a few days ago, I plugged it in and my devices connected but I have no internet. The hub itself advised activation date was the 17th so I waited and on the 18th with still no internet, rang BT, explained an engineer had been out etc and was advised that my activation date was the 19th and it should go live then but wait till midnight to allow systems to refresh and he confirmed an engineer wouldn't be attending unless after the 19th, there was a line fault but given its been checked and the landline works... that was unlikely.
Last night received a message from BT advising the engineer had been rescheduled to the 1st. This morning, day after scheduled activation and still no internet so rang BT to enquire and have now been advised that an Openreach engineer has to physically 'activate' the connection and it's not simply a case of a software / remote activation.
I questioned this, again pointing out the engineer had been, the line was active, my landline was working and on Monday BT advised it should automatically activate as of yesterday. This fell on deaf ears so it's been left with BT going away to liaise with Openreach to ascertain why they couldn't attend yesterday and to rearrange.
However, I'm confused as both the engineer and the first chap at BT intimated that on the activation date, it just... activates. There was no mention of a bloke physically having to come out and do whatever just to get connected. Again, landline works and all devices see the hub but no connectivity.
Apologies for the boring account but given the above, can anybody offer any insight into the actual process... I thought it was a case of waiting till the computer said "Go!" yesterday then I'd have blue lights on my home hub and the internet and peace would return to the house.
Thanks in advance.
