So my USG, cloud key gen 2 plus and AP's arrived last night all excited I thought I'd rip out my router and get to work I will be done in an hour......

5 hours later had to roll back as the Mrs was getting annoyed at not being able to watch TV smile

In the end most problem stemmed from the USG that while negotiating ppoe with no issue I was still without internet seems the firmware on it has a bug where it doesn't give out the default gateway in the DHCP negotiation. Finally figure out how to get it to issue the DG then try to get the cloud key working yet more fun trying to update its FW and being left with it saying failed to boot seemed it was bricked it just kept rebooting after leaving a while it finally seemed to boot completely.

Seriously why did I want to replace my Fritzbox smile

The USG isn't great. its rather old and slow, I keep threating to do away with it.

Quick question, why did you not go for a dream machine?

I seem to remember PPoE was not the 'usual' connnection type when I first setup my Unifi kit 10 years ago, but I got it working and it's worked perfectly (and through a few expansions and upgrades!) since then.

The poor bit was fine it was just the inbuilt DHCP server that's gubbed, I'd have wanted it set statically yet you couldn't specify the DG either in the gui

We no longer fit Unifi stuff as it is garbage and the firmware dog slow.

It hasn't even got any better with age.

Just get yourself a decent router and a couple of Cisco or Ruckus access points from Ebay.

Web UI and a piece of piss to set up and can be running in less than 10 minutes, even for a novice networker.

I will stick with it for a bit I was going to give 802.1x eap-tls ago but after it being this convoluted I may give it a pass smile

Don't you have the internal DHCP settings in the dashboard? I do on

Settings -> Network -> Edit your network ID -> Advanced ->

My only gripe is that I wouldn't consider DHCP set up to be "advanced" .

Ah yes, controller first, then USG.

Controller comes before everything.

Can't set up the controller without internet or I couldn't as you need to get it to your account but can't without internet

You can use a local account with the controller. You can also setup the USG without the controller. Your choice.

Unifi has it's quirks, but once you get used to them it's a really good system for the money

This is how did it:

1) plug controller into existing network, configure it
2) plug APs into existing network, make them work with controller, start using “new” WiFi.
3) swap out router for USG, configure USG from controller
4) backup controller,

Have to say i agree. I'm using some unifi stuff at the moment but the glitches and software issues are astounding. Touch wood its all working at the moment, but its made me reluctant to buy any more.

Found the USG to be rather underpowered and unable to run half the things unifi advertise. Still no live stats either which is a nightmare for trying to track down bandwidth hogging devices.

The final straw was finding out it doesn’t support L2TP VPN client unlike almost every other router.

Switched to an old hp microserver running Opnsense, which so far appears to be excellent.

As others have said, do the set-up with a local connection, connect via the cloud account once everything is up and running.

I've fitted dozens of UniFi APs and many Cloudkeys, never really have any issues. Not used a lot of USGs, tend to just use the ISP provided routers in domestic environments.

The mistake is to jump in on the latest firmware too quickly, I always wait until the firmware is proven. Difficult I know if you have multiple sites and have auto update on,

Well it's all up and running and I've canceled my second AP for now as the coverage in both floors is so much better now the ap is in the middle of the house on the 1st floor.

IPS and dpi is proving interesting
