But its a bit hit and miss as to whether it works or not...

I posted before actually looking at the possibility of pop3 pickup on the gmail website.

Now I've tried to configure it, it doesn't appear to work properly. However I kinda rushed it yesterday, so I may well have missed one of the required settings.

I think most people miss the port setting which is described on the Gmail POP3 settings help.

hmm....port settings we're all set correctly (I did originally have them reversed) however it still will not pick up.

not that I have any gmail to pick up anyway.
