Ok I’m a bit of a Mac Luddite when it comes to this so apologies if it’s dead simple.

Out iMac currently has Mojave installed and it’s wanting to install Catalina. Every pervious upgrade of Mac OS as far as I am aware (wife may have done them) it’s never asked for which hard drive we want it to be installed on. It’s just done them.

Which one should I be selecting. Obviously not the TM backup as that is a small portable hard drive just left plugged in to a usb slot and the fat 32 is another drive plugged in as extended storage space where I back up my iTunes and photos to periodically. This is removed and stored at work so wouldn’t normally show up.

So I am left with the main Mac drive or the Mac OS X extended. Which one should I use. Also I’m not after a clean fresh install. I don’t want to be copying all my photos music etc back over and starting from scratch again.

Any help greatly appreciated.

The internal drive will be the grey one (max OS X extended?), so I would be selecting that one. The picture is too small to make out which drive is called what...but internal drives will be grey in OSX. Hope this helps.

Sorry maybe this can help. I’m not really over familiar with MAC. I’m okay using it but as for setting it up and playing with the OS. Nope that’s not for me.

My last time working on really fettling with operating systems was DOS 6.2 and windows 3.11, god I deal old. :-).

Used to build PCs back in the day of windows 95. Man I should have kept up to date.

Hopefully that helps. Not being familiar with Mac I was wondering if it was using the Mac OS extended as a partition to install the OS on and then using the Macintosh HD to store programs and personal data.

Infact looking at the reviews of OS Catalina I’m not even sure I want to upgrade. iTunes now defunct and spilt up so it’s optimised for a Music subscription (nope I still purchase music). Maybe it’s not for me. This is a 2013 iMac as well. So I would be stuck at Catalina it seems as big sur only supports 2015 iMacs onwards. Oh well.

You want the 2nd from the left (Macintosh HD). That's your internal boot disc & will contain your current OS.
