Hello all,

First let me apologise- I’m not great or that into technology!

I need to delete some of the thousands of photos I have on my phone as it’s running out of space.

We have a cloud thing from Team Knowhow that came as part of a package when my wife bought a new laptop. I am in the process of backing up my photos onto there, and my idea was that once I’d done that I would be able delete the photos from my phone.

Having just had a quick look on their website it says that anything I delete from my phone will also be deleted from the cloud. Is that typically the way?

Seems annoying if it is as id hoped to be able to store them there rather than using the space on my phone.

Can't you just plug your phone into a PC using a USB cable and copy them off that way?

What's the phone?

I'd just buy an iCloud or Google Drive subscription.

Yeah, was just hoping to not fill the laptop up too and liked that I could get to them again if needed without the laptop.

It’s an iPhone 6. Do they work different then? I thought a cloud is a cloud...

No cloud's a generic term.

The simplest option is probably just to buy an iCloud or Google Drive subscription.

For the most part they "just work".

iOS should just be doing it for you to be honest.

Yep, just buy some iCloud storage

Go into settings on your phone then click on your AppleID (at the top of the settings page. From there, select iCloud and you'll be able to see how much storage you have. Can't remember the default, but its very cheap to updage - I pay £2.49/month for 200Gb. I'm thing I might move to Apple One, which combines iCLoud, Apple Music (Family), Apple TV+ and Apple Games into a single subscription for £20/month. I've got everything other than the Games one already, so it works out cheaper.

Then under 'Apps using iCloud' make sure Photos is ON. There are a few options, but the main thing is to make sure iCloud is backing them up.

It's a two minute job, but will take some time (in the background) to upload all the pictures on your phone to iCloud.

Make sure your phone is on the home wi-fi too unless you have unlimited data.

Thanks all. And if I subscribe to the Apple one I can then delete them from my phone (once safely saved to their cloud) without losing them?

I'm sure someone will chip in who's managed to fill their iPhone (I haven't managed it yet) but check this?

If you delete them from the phone you will delete them from the cloud.
However, the phone should manage storage - I.e. the photos on your phone will be reduced size/quality and the phone will pull down the full image should you need it.

And I don’t think you need to pay for photos at all. I think all Apple users get photos cloud storage for free.

Edit: well, you pay for it upfront with the Apple premium/tax

Ah ok thanks. My phone’s pretty chocka. Think I’ll do as suggested above and stick them all on the laptop (and get an external hard drive to back that up to) then delete them off my phone then. Was hoping to treat it like getting a new phone and move a select few bike pics etc to a folder then delete the rest off my phone and just have them if I want them.

Thanks all smile
