Anyone got any experience of the Buffalo Terrastation? I like the idea of RAID 5 and it seems quite a good price at about 60p per gig?

Oh and the title should be NAS! Bad typing day

No experience Stuh, but contemplated getting one when in Japan and again recently.

Ended up going for the manual solution of using the disks in my machines and the three externals I have (cheaper and almost as robust).

If you need disk space though, I think it looks like a good option.

voyds - the LaCie isn't RAID5. One of the big selling points (to me) of the Buffalo job. A LaCie equivalent is over 1k.

Yep, that's the cheaper option, but i like the idea of having access to the storage without needing the PC turned on. Part of the role will be to act as the server for my new Sonos music system.......plus it should be less flakey than my MS server!

Ah, but I don't own any MS stuff these days. Old Powerbook to disk serve, iMac for the TV/music distribution and new Powerbook to read Pistonheads on the bog.

If you get a Terastation, let me know how you get on with it You can never get enough storage!

OK, just ordered the 1TB unit from DABS. Costed it up against buying sperate disks and a RAID5 controller and it seems a bit of a steal............will update again when it arrives.

So the Sonos doesn't need software on the pc to connect then?

Nope. The unix based software runs on the sonos controller. You just point it at a network share.

Murph - Unit arrived yesterday. First impressions are that it is very well put together. I was quite surprised by how compact it was and even more by the fact that it is completely silent! Apparently it has a very large fan which allows for a very low spin speed.

Took about 5 mins to configure using the supplied CD. Most of the config is done via a web interface. It took a few hours to configure itself into RAID5 but is now sitting happily on my network.

I haven't really had a chance to judge performance as yet, as my current network is onlt 100mbit and i'm currently transfering my audio files (300GB worth). Looks like i'm getting about 30GB an hour at the moment.

I'll update again when i've used it for a couple of weeks.

Does it have hot swap disks Stuh?

I've seen and handled the unit, but can't recall if it was hot swappable or not.

I'd be using it wireless effectively, so transfer times would be a bit slower I suspect.

Cool, this was the limiting factor with loads of other systems. This might be the one I go for.
